Green turtle key, abaco bahamas. Quiet small island. If you rent about and island hop, you will be the only one on the beaches

I suggested Treasure Cay earlier, but this is really good as well. Had a phenomenal dinner at the Green Turtle Club.

Atlantis resort in the Bahamas

Just got back a couple of months ago from here....not for honeymoon.

When we went to DR we pretty much stayed at the resort the entire time since it was our honeymoon

Dumb. So the 3 beaches you went to were rocky? There are beautiful beaches all over the Caribbean. They aren't all mountainous and rocky.

A lot of the beaches were rocky on Aruba, some on Curacao, nasty sand on Roatan with ants everywhere. Gran Turk is okay but the sand is 'dirtier' than you would expect.

Belize was cool but it had coral everywhere so we did some dives and left the beaches alone.

All in all, the decent beaches I've seen in the Caribbean are payed beaches, as opposed to the mostly fantastic Florida and Gulf Shores beaches

Budget really matters as well.

Do you want to see a different beach every day, have to get in car to go to beach, or just plop out of your villa/house/condo on to the beach?

Will you rent a car or do you want to be able to walk everywhere or take taxi/public transport? Some islands where you stay is as important factor as anything for finding the right fit.

Do you care about dining options, on island activities(casino, snorkeling/diving, fishing, zip-lining etc)?

If you don't want to do all inclusive, I'd suggest St. Maarten (French side) or BVI. St. Maarten has plenty to do, a ton of beaches and good food. Rent a jeep a drive around the island.
BVI and St. John are nice, but very quiet. Beautiful water.
The resorts at St. Lucia are nice- Ladera & Sugar Beach are recommended. They opened a Hotel Chocolate that looked nice as well. Outside of the resorts, I didn't think too much of St. Lucia.
I'd stay away from St.Thomas and Caymans.

You're right, I don't get the absence of flexibility. Then again, I've come along way from my rigid, self restrictive days. One day should not make or break a vacation of this scale.

Not on West End Bay which is the beach to be at.

Gran Turk

Provo bro. Grace Bay Beach is 12 miles of pristine sand and water and Middle Caicos has some stunning beaches.

I agree about Belize.

It simply appears that you went to the wrong areas or the wrong island in the case of Turks & Caicos. Grand Turk is where the cruise ships go.

If it hasn't been said yet, St. Barts is by far my favorite getaway in the Bahamas.

Small hope bay lodge, andros, bahamas.

Small resort. No kids during dinner (they all eat in a separate dining room), great diving/snorkeling. Direct flight from Houston to Nassau is 2.5 hours. The resort then arranges a 12 minute flight from Nassau to andros.

It is the opposite of Atlantis style super resort. Small place with fantastic service. Treat you like family.

May want to be wary of the Caribbean right now.

Painful and Rapid Spread of New Virus in Caribbean

quote:

The virus is chikungunya, derived from an African word that loosely translates as ‘‘contorted with pain.’’ People encountering it in the Caribbean for the first time say the description is fitting. While the virus is rarely fatal it is extremely debilitating.

‘‘It is terrible, I have never in my life gotten such an illness,’’ said Maria Norde, a 66-year-old woman confined to bed at her home on the lush eastern Caribbean island of Dominica. ‘‘All my joints are in pain.’’

Outbreaks of the virus have long made people miserable in Africa and Asia. But it is new to the Caribbean, with the first locally transmitted case documented in December in French St. Martin, likely brought in by an infected air traveler. Health officials are now working feverishly to educate the public about the illness, knock down the mosquito population, and deal with an onslaught of cases.

I've been there 3 times in total. First time was with some "coworkers" and we sailed there from Miami. Second time was with those same "coworkers" who flew me there on a private plane. The last time was with my girlfriend and I just bought tickets that connected through St. Maarten.
