I hope you realize how dumb that is. Use the full capacity of the roadway. You don't have to be a mindless sheep. If everyone piles into one lane for no reason, it can back up and disrupt other intersections, entry/exit points, etc. and cause even more problems.

Out of principal, if I find myself in the lane that needs to let in vehicles, I won't let anyone in until we get to the merge point. They think I'm being a dick 3/4 of a mile out, but I'm just trying to teach them good habits.

if only everyone were not complete idiots, the zipper merge would work
except in the real world it doesn't because you have too many people letting more than one person in at a time or you have too many people trying to cut in with another car and this all causes the traffic to back up

So what is the solution? If everyone is going to screw it up anyway, I'm definitely driving down to the end of the lane if I can.
About the only thing I avoid is cutting into the merging lane just to make up ground on a few cars. If I'm already in the lane, I just sit there pissed off at my dumbassery.

zipper merge works in every other damn country I've been to. But the instinct kicks in here that someone is 'cheating' the queue like it's a damn grocery store. Zipper merge people, it's awesome when done right! bring on the downvotes
