X = stupid sheep
Y = smart driver

The line of traffic for X and Y should be almost the same length.

I don't think that term means what you think it does.

But once everyone is merged, no one has to slow down or stop.

SO you're just ignoring all the extra time that goes into what you want to happen to try to make a point?

No, not letting them in creates traffic.

The etiquette should be everyone lets one car in, but if no one has to be let in... why do you think they have signs warning of a need to merge?

The signs are to let assholes like you know to get over yourself and not block people from merging.

If I'm already in the proper lane, doing as you suggest will cost me more time, not less

This is your problem, it's not about what best for you only.

When you know the lane is closed a mile ahead because of construction or whatever, and everybody else has moved over, and you zoom all the way up to where the barricade is, I'm not letting you in. Sorry.

amen.

The results of this thread really speak to why we have the traffic problems we do in Louisiana considering our small population.

It's funny that you're mad at other people for driving with the same mindset you have.

If it was encouraged to use that entire open lane, there wouldn't be the signs there warning to merge... you'd be doing 40 and be like "whoops, there's a barricade" and merge then.

Ever heard of flow?

Both are proper lanes. Don't be mad because you chose to cave and join the sheep herd.

That stretch of road is a no-go zone for me these days. It's a giant clusterfrick.

What I'm talking about is this:

yea I hear you on that. If someone moves from the left lane into the right lane just to skip a few cars and then come back to the left lane, I agree. But if I'm getting on at an ramp for example and nobody is using the right lane, I'm using the road. If there's a nice gap close but before the merge point I'll be happy to merge, but I'm not going to sit in the right lane half a mile early and wait for someone to let me in.

Yeah I have no problem with flowing traffic. My beef is where there's a bottleneck.

That happens because people like Jim Rockford and chalmetteowl are too cool to let people in.

Sometimes, but mostly is because the people going up to the end don't start looking for a spot to merge into until they get to the end of the lane.

So I should wait in line and you should get to zoom past me? NO, frick you. The right lane merges INTO the left lane, therefore the left lane controls who gets in. Get in line behind me and everyone else, you aren't special, and you don't get to skip in line

this really is a good representation of what goes on on the road. Bunch of people who think they know, bunch that do know, bunch that know but are realistic etc. After some friendly hand gestures, some brake checks and cursing, everybody cools down til the next construction zone lol

I'm pretty sure I know just a teeny bit more than you do about the subject of traffic flow. I notice you still never said what credentials you have that validates your opinions.
