re: Federal agency confirms fire has broken out on blown-out gas well
Everyone calm down. I can guarantee the reason the rig was evacuated was that gas was on the rig floor so they shut down what they could and got everyone out in case the gas hit an ignition source. It looks like the gas has ignited so what happens next?

For one, it's gas... Last time I heard gas can't "spill" so everyone asking if it has the potential of being a Macondo can be relieved. It's lighter than air!

Second, while a large portion of gas wells on the shelf are low pressure, the current A-3 well is producing in the 11500' Sand. Current Bottomhole Pressure reported is approx. 7600 psia (Initial Res. Pressure is around 9200 psia) so abnormally pressured reservoir. Best case scenario here is the pressure drops to the normal pressure range, the rock grains contact each other again and fines move into the wellbore and sand the well up.

Third, it seems like the Hercules and Walter crews did their job as best they could to minimize damage and loss of life. Let's be thankful everyone got off alive.

ST 220 is in Federal Waters for anyone trying to look for well and field data on SONRIS (you won't find it on Sonris which is a state website).

re: Federal agency confirms fire has broken out on blown-out gas well
Separate post but this is what I'm hearing. Take it with a grain of salt.

The incident occurred after perforating the zone. They went in and thought they perfed underbalanced but once the guns (TCP) went off they started losing fluid to the formation.

What could have happened at this point is the formation was sucking fluid in and, eventually, the formation was able to overcome the lower hydrostatic pressure and started to flow back on them. I'm not sure what caused a delay or error in this step.

Once they realized they were getting a kick, they tried to close the blind shear rams which did not shear the drill pipe. Once they failed, gas was getting on the rig floor so they got everyone out asap.

Again, just what I'm hearing so take this with caution.

Heard similar

It doesn't make any sense whatsoever to me though.

IF the rams didn't work correctly, then it'll make more sense but I did not hear that part before

IMO this was 100% preventable and someone fricked up big time.. The signs should have been obvious that they were taking a kick

It seems that these blow out preventers could use a bit better design. Shouldn't the last resort preventing device be a bit more reliable? Granted, I don't know what the frick I'm talking about when it comes to this sort of thing.
