Yes. I said no more male dogs at my house. They pissed on everything. I ended up getting new carpet in bedrooms because of this. I know carpet is trashy.

The folks trying to paint you as anti-dog are wrong and missing the MAIN point which is that you came to the table in a compromising way and the sister-in-law wants more. Although my dog is free to go anywhere in the house including the furniture I totally respect the rules of somebody else's house.
The sister-in-laws response tells me the dog is probably also undisciplined. If they had a dog who responded to commands keeping them off the furniture would not be a big deal. Undisciplined dogs are even worse when introduced to a new environment.
I would put the dog AND the sister-in-law in a kennel for the duration.

My wife's little brother and his wife are planning on staying with us in our home for Christmas. They're bringing their dog, which is fine. I do not allow pets on my furniture however and the sister-in-law is apparently pretty upset about this. She feels like I'm some kind of monster since I don't want dog hair all over my sofa, chairs etc. Not to mention dirty paws if it's raining.
Why are you so damn uppity?
Posted on 12/10/19 at 11:35 am to SirSaintly
Make sure they take their damn shoes off too and purchase clean booties for the dog to wear in your house!

Normally I would tell you I completely disagree with you and you're being a tight arse, but it's your house your rules. They don't get to run shite. They don't like it either, leave the dog or get a hotel.

I had the opposite issue. Guest staying with my that didn't want MY dog on MY furniture.

Our dog is so calm and chill that they actually ask us the bring him along. I walk him before we go and he has no need to go outside while he is there. Granted this is only 2-4 hours at a time though.

I WEAR THE PANTS IN MY FAMILY!! ARRGGHH!!!
Happy wife happy life. Let her call the shots of the little stuff that doesn’t matter. Put your foot down on the big stuff. If you put your foot down all the damn time, it doesn’t speak volumes when you do it.

Completely missed the point(s)

Nope.
I have 2 dogs and wouldn’t mind your no furniture rule at all if I was asking to stay with you and bring my dogs.
Also, you may want to look into TattleTale devices to ensure those rude frickers don’t get on your furniture.

If the Lab is a house dog he is always on their furniture. Put a sheet on one couch and put him there. Otherwise y’all will be constantly correcting the dog, which will become the main source of conflict and frustration. Embrace your guest and accommodate them.
Everybody else will enjoy the dog more than hanging with you. You sound like a dick.

Bro my Pitty stays by my side at all times. He sleeps with me, sits on the furniture, and hates everyone else.
We are coming over for Christmas so you better find somewhere else for your pets and kids to stay, because he WILL attack them. Deal with it

i like dogs more than people
that being said, millenials sense of entitlement on having their pets with them everywhere they go is nauseating.
plot twist, am millennial.

You can stick to your guns.
They may or may not come with or without the dog.
If they do come, you'll be fighting with the dog to get off the furniture. Maybe they can bring their own piece of furniture for the dog?
If you want to keep the peace, you can cover whatever furniture the dog is prone to use.
I think the guests should honor your wishes, but I'd weigh the PITA it's going to be to keep the dog off the furniture for 5 days and make my decision from there.

But what if his wife is the bread winner?
Or if brother and sister-in-law gave them the money to put the down payment on their house? Or gave them the furniture.
Bet you didn’t think of that now, did you?

Tell em to eat a dick. It’s your house, they need to respect your rules

People like this are in every thread similar to this. Even though they are completely wrong for thinking it’s ok in your house, they’re still family. It’s called tact. The hammer will probably strike a little softer if the biological siblings work it out. Don’t be mistaken, though, the hammer must fall.
