Very rude of them to just expect that their dog is welcome on your furniture. My mom came and stayed with us Thanksgiving for the first time ever and even she asked it would be ok if she brought her dog. We have a house dog so it was no big deal.

I love dogs but I don’t want dogs at the airport or on my couch. These two must have been attention deprived as kids. Look at my dog! Isn’t he the best!

I do not allow pets on my furniture
Most people I’ve observed who have this policy have no opinion of pets on furniture but rather love the opportunity to wield this small power over the rest of the world. “I ain’t havin’ no animals on MY furniture.”

I’d say just get over it and let it go. You’re having people over. shite will get messy. Man up and don’t worry too much about hims pwecious furniture.

They're bringing their dog, which is fine.

There is your problem. You opened the door to them bringing their animal to your house. Thus, in their mind (where I'm sure they think it is totally normal to bring a dog over as if it is akin to a child) it is hard to justify how you can be ok with them bringing the dog, but not ok with it climbing on the furniture. Don't even put the caveat in there. Cut it off at the beginning and say no dogs, period.

My BIL has a dog and it is nothing but a nuisance. But he knows the dog doesn't come to my house. That way we don't even have to get to step 2 of trying to keep it off the furniture

No.

My dogs are allowed on the furniture so I don't really care if other dogs also get up there.

Now, your disgusting kids with the disgusting germs and dirt. Keep them on the floor.

That said, your house your rules. Tell them to pound sand.

Do they have kids? They sound like every couple I know that has a dog and no kids. They really and truly think a pet = child. Don't get me wrong, I know pets are special and I totally respect that. But as a parent and dog owner, it drives me mad when I hear people talk about their pet like it deserves the same rights as a child.

I can also judge the amount of non-parent, pet owners by the number of downvotes I get.

Bottom line, when you go to someone's home you play by their rules. You don't like it then don't go
It's simple as this. I'm a dog person and my pooches are allowed on the furniture...my furniture. I don't understand the point of having a pet in the house if it can't be near you.
However, I absolutely respect a homeowner's right to deny pets onto their furniture and even into their house.

Tell her the dog is welcome to stay out in the backyard all day and come inside at night to go in its kennel until morning or she can leave the dog at a pet boarding place if she doesn't like your rules about no dogs on the furniture.

Dog people are weird as hell. Would she be ok if a frickin pig ran around her house or a chicken took a dump on her floor? Probably not. Why is a dog any different, it’s a damned animal (and belongs outside imo).

If they’re putting up a fuss about this before they’re even staying with you, imagine how much of a hassle they’re gonna be when they’re staying in your house with you

I really hate people that elevate their pets (dogs especially) to human status.

My sister doesn't allow our dog on her furniture when we visit. Consequently, we keep the dog off the furniture and abide by her wishes because it's her house and we're not assholes.

My wife used to be hesitant to tell people stuff like that. When she finally figured out that if she didn't do it I would (and in my matter-of-fact, to-the-point, don't-care-if-it-pisses-them-off style), she got over her fear of breaking unwelcomed news to family.

How about you just leave the fricking dog at home like normal people do?

I have no kids and a dog and I would NEVER think to ask if I can bring my dog to someone's home for 5 days. I can afford boarding him at the local horse ranch that he loves.
