Doesn't really match up with the ~20% heavier claim made earlier.

What was stated:

quote:

Most EVs, thanks to the large battery system, weigh hundreds of pounds or more than equivalent gas vehicles.

quote:

The weight difference is about 300lbs, ~7%.

If looking at something like an Accord which weighs around 3,300 lbs then that 20% is very realistic. EV's are simply heavier and manufacturers, in order to get the best range they can get away with advertising, use tires that optimize range at the expense of tire longevity. For performance-oriented EV's that are running soft-compound tires the treadwear is going to be much more significant. There are EV-specific tires but you won't see them with 60k or 75k mile tread life warranties.

My point is thats a stupid comparison and anyone doing it is either being intentionally disingenuous or doesn't understand the difference in the vehicles. We don't compare curb weight of F150s vs F250s because it's apples to oranges.

Got it, i don't think anyone here supports that. I'll mildly defend the tax credits but thats about it.

Since EV proponents frequently factor in maintenance items into the cost of ownership, honestly assessing shorter tire life is perfectly reasonable.

It absolutely is part of it. Like i said earlier there's about a 5% torque factor and then probably around ~5% weight depending on what you're comparing. If you're two options are a Corolla and a Model S Plaid, there's going to be a bigger gap obviously, but thats not what any reasonable consumer is comparing. The reality is the gap is pretty small.

Look at the whole picture initial cost, carrying cost, fuel, oil changes, brakes, tires, battery replacement reserve and on and on.

As a tesla and full size truck owner, I agree. It's a concern that must be accounted for.

Well the first dude I responded to apparently supports the mandates. He said something along the lines of hoping that everyone he sees with black nasty smoke coming out is forced to drive an EV...

Edit, A Pew research poll showed about 40% of American support EV mandates. Pretty large percentage if you ask me...

Now
Let’s talk about how making cars/trucks heavier changes crash results.

No, I don’t. And no, I didn’t. I said this:
quote:

I don’t own an EV, but every time I’m driving behind a vehicle, big or small, belching out black foul smelling bullshite, I hope that EVs replace the fricking lot of them.

There are a lot of very stupid, poorly educated people out there. Surface thinkers.

I think the reason you get threads like this is not necessarily a hatred of EVs. It's the mandates being proposed by the government
Which shows how emotional people are that they can't even place their anger at the right place.

Between tires, batteries, and generating electricity for charging, EVs are at best a net neutral vs ICE vehicles

lol no. Not even close.

Yeah it’s almost like the government is trying to force adoption

That would be a great point if it wasn't entirely irrelevant to the OP and subsequent discussion.

This thread makes that obvious. Hence the reason to point out the negatives of EVs to people.

What would you propose they do besides combat groupthink?

Funny how no one ever cared about the roads for all these much heavier SUVs out there.

No one hates EVs. Reasonable people hate the idea of EV mandates.

Are you going to actually try and claim that no one ever hated on EVs on the OT before these mandates came about fairly recently?

Direct facts and data of my own, yes I do buy into that. Crazy thought, I know.

I have literal data I keep that shows I've saved monthly/yearly or whatever by switching 1 of our vehicles to an EV, but tell me more about this data that you're relying on others to give you that make you think it's better than my own.
