At EV Garage Miami, a Sweetwater repair shop that services 90 percent electric vehicles, lead technician Jonathan Sanchez said tires are the most frequent thing customers come in about — no matter what model or make of EV they’re driving. Tire mileage can vary widely of course, but he said he frequently changes EV tires at just 8,000 to 10,000 miles — a fourth or even fifth of typical tire wear on a gas-burning car.

quote:

There are a number of explanations for the fast wear — from the way EVs work to the composition of the rubber to individual driving habits and maintenance practices — but vehicle and tire makers and industry experts acknowledge the issue. The tire manufacturer Michelin said conventional tires on electric vehicles consume tires 20 percent faster than on a gas-powered car — a figure commonly cited by EV makers as well — but Goodyear also has said they could wear up to 50 percent faster.

quote:

Most EVs, thanks to the large battery system, weigh hundreds of pounds or more than equivalent gas vehicles. That can put more added stress on tires, said Sanchez, who worked six years at Tesla as a master technician before coming to EV Garage Miami.

quote:

Some EV-specific tires are made differently as well — to both enhance mileage range from battery power and to offset one standout feature of electric vehicles. Without mechanical engines, they’re super quiet, which actually can make for an unpleasant driving experience. Tires can whine or hum rolling on pavement.

quote:

To address that lack of noise, some premium tires suggested for EVs use softer rubber and have foam injected inside that dampens the sound, akin to trading out hard dress shoes for tennis shoes. Those soft textured tires, while quieter, also can wear down faster.

I've never had a car that can do 60 in four seconds but if I did I'm sure I would abuse it.

On average, 30K miles is the popular estimate for the OE set, but some Tesla car owners have reported higher ranges. It could also go down to 18K-20K miles depending on driving habits and conditions. Practically, Tesla tires last 20K – 40K miles.

You realize this is probably from aggressive driving right?

The excessive weight of an EV wears everything out much faster….

Yeah, EVs take off faster than normal cars. Kids need to quit spinning their tires.

The article I saw says due to weight EV tires should wear about 20% faster

My original set on my Jeep Grand Cherokee went almost 90k.

This dude is a tire expert like I’m a Soviet Cartographer.

I’ve told the tale of our two-year LEAF lease shortly after it came out. It was a great deal for a commuter car with the state and federal tax credits and off peak home electricity rate. But they put these shite-arse Bridgestone Ecopias (dystopias) on them. Barely made it through lease with them.

Heavy arse vehicles need tires more often. Which means more oil for the tire making process

Nah man, becuase there's a battery in the car it makes the rubber wear out faster.

I have no dog in this hunt. But tire coat usually blows the minds of first time BMW/merc owners.

Yeah...as someone posted about 20% faster

If you're burning through tires every 15K miles it's because you're burning them up on the pavement.

You know how I know who didn’t read the OP’s post?

I would imagine Tesla drivers incur city miles. Not highway miles.

That’s a big difference for tires.
