re: 'Doomsday' asteroid Apophis could hit Earth in 2036

Well if it does hit Earth, there's a 75% chance it goes in the ocean anyway.

I like our odds.

Would be one hell of a wave.
I don't know why but being on a beach and seeing a 2000ft high wave is one of my all time worst fears. Would definitely be a deer in the headlights moment.

Right, because tsunamis are nothing.

1000 ft wide is doomsday?

No

But it translates to around a 3-400 megaton nuclear weapon.

Or 400,000 kilotons.

Hirosoma was 16 kilotons.

Um.

Hitting the water would be the WORST thing an impact like this could cause.

For any but Lake Superior, the same as a land impact.

yep..such an over rated bomb in terms of destruction. If people only knew....

We detonated much stronger bombs almost daily that were literally 20 times stronger just to see what would happen

"Shooting down" isn't a particularly good option.

If you hit it with something it will simply frag into a bunch of rocky missiles that would still do a lot of damage.

I've heard the best option is to use the gravity of a spaceship to pull or nudge it off of its trajectory. If you so just a little early enough then it doesn't even come close to us.

the gravity of a spaceship is nearly zero. you couldn't get to it far enough away to make a difference

Should we not have taken this opportunity to load it with an explosive to remotely detonate at a later date, thereby taking the chances of it striking in 2036 to 0%?

Where the scientists at?
