I was born and raised in Baton Rouge. I moved away for 8 years and then I moved back to Baton Rouge with my family. After only a year we were looking to move out - it took us 6 years to finally be able to move and I pinch myself every morning to make sure it is real and WE LOVE IT. I like BR, but there are other places that are more compelling for our family (wife kids etc) It is an individual thing really.

I miss my family, friends and the Cajun culture. I enjoy making more money and seeing meeting other people enough to offset the homesickness. I go back to BR to see family often.

Las Vegas outside of the strip is quite possibly the most depressing city in America. I know it has the highest suicide rate of any major metro by far.

Glad your friend is happy there

There's pros and cons to every place you live.

I left LA after college and for the most part it's been a good thing. I miss my friends and family, but that isn't unique to being in LA. On the plus side, NYC is an amazing place for a young college grad to live. Tons of nightlife, people, culture, etc. Just don't expect to live here forever, or walk away with more money than you came with.

I don't regret leaving LA, but I do often wonder how life had turned out if I had stayed.

You won't get a whole lot of truthful responses in this thread and the reason for that is that people's egos will never let them admit they made a mistake

I'll be honest. I miss the hell out of New Orleans. It's dirty, corrupt, and dangerous. But it's the only placed I've ever lived that felt like home. I wasn't raised there, though I was born in Louisiana. But after being gone for over 2 years, I still find myself having conversations about it relatively often (partially because Colorado is so transient).

I do love the outdoor recreation here. But I miss life in Nola. It's not for everyone, or even most people. But I'll be back there again within a couple years. Probably for good at that point. I still have krewes to parade with, and Mardi Gras Indian tribes that want me to from with them. That city just fits my personality and interests.

In our experience, the shifts are better to the nurses but most hospitals don't offer all of the differentials. Wife's base pay is slightly higher but her hospital has ZERO weekend diff.

I don't regret my move from Baton Rouge. I moved to Texas about 16 years ago and, financially, Texas has been very good to me. I also met the woman of my dreams here. With that said, her and I would move to New Orleans in a heartbeat if the crime situation there wasn't so bad. I do miss my family and friends in Baton Rouge. I'd say that's been the toughest part. I miss them every day.

I miss my family greatly but I doubt I'd ever move back to the new Orleans area. The taxes, crime, lack of pretty outdoors, etc just don't really make it a great place to raise kids imo. I wouldn't consider anywhere else in Louisiana as all of my family is in the new Orleans area.

What kinda range of base pay is typical there?

Nurses with experience here around Phoenix Metro area usually have base rates of around $40-47/hr...not including differentials. Night shift diff is 18%; weekend shift diff is 6%.

frick no weekend diff. That's just abuse if you ask me. I wouldn't work a hospital nursing job that didn't offer weekend diffs. I've been a nurse for 16 years and every hospital(in LA and AZ) offered weekend diff.

Yeah, I don't get that posters statement. Vegas outside of the strip is pretty cool with a lot of stuff to do. I really enjoy living out here.

I mean I guess if someone is a degenerate gambler going into The Wild Wild West Casino on a Tuesday afternoon could be depressing. I'm assuming the people offing themselves in Vegas have some deep gambling issues. Haha.

have you ever been to Henderson? it's like 20 miles away from downtown and i'm pretty sure it's Nevada's second biggest city.

I guess if you consider Mandeville and Covington to be new Orleans, yeah it is las vegas.

I don't regret it, but I feel guilty all the time that I can't be there more for people.

Again...I have friends that live there. They have a house in Seven Hills, a really nice gated community. We stayed with them a couple months ago. Took me like 15-20 minutes to get to strip from their house.
