Do gums grow back naturally?

I was recently part of a debate on whether gums grow back naturally or not.

A few of my friends dip (obviously a filthy habit, but I'm not gonna judge) and we started talking about receding gums. There were two schools of thought- 1) Your gums do not grow back naturally and the only way to fix receding gums is surgery or professional intervention or 2) one's gums grow back naturally once behavior which leads them to recede (dipping) is dropped.

I agreed that gums would grow back naturally just because I generally have faith in the human body to repair itself naturally. After doing some online research I found that it seems to be a debated issue to the world at large. So I have come to the OT- where I'm sure there is a wealth of resident dippers and ex-dippers and wealthy dentists/oral surgeons who can shed some light on this issue.

Yes, they do. It is the bone damage that occurs from the deteriorated gums that does not regenerate.

Dental soft tissue grows back. Just like if u have your wisdom teeth pulled the holes eventually grow back in. Same thing happens with receding gums from damage. Receding gums from disease is a different story

in highschool for sure, I admittedly enjoyed a fat chaw back in the day but I'm not quite the hog hunter I used to be though

i'm too nervous about dental hygiene to keep it up these days.

They grow back. The body is a self healing and regulating organism. They will grow back.

come on man. back in high school you would always have a horseshoe in your mouth that would make Seabiscuit blush. nowadays, your horseshoes are bigger than the one tattooed on Jeff Saturday's ass. you aren't fooling anyone.

are you making fun of people for dipping?

that's pretty unamerican of you

besides, we don't make fun of your sissy painted fingernails and your dressing in old lady dresses, so why would you make fun of us for dipping?

live and let live

re: Do gums grow back naturally?
But I guess if you have short teeth like I do the receding gum line would show more teeth in return? Just a thought
