i dont mind if they have beer or wine. I just make do. People that dont like cash bars are the same people who wont even tip at an open bar.

ETA: the only money dances ive seen were are wedding from people who went to public school, and westbankers

Sit down dinner weddings suck. Nothing more fun than being stuck in an assigned seat for an hour.

So sitting down to eat food is a formality you'd rather not be hassled by? Imo is sure beats walking around with a plate of food in one hand trying to eat and socialize at the same time.

Let's Face it, the reason why people have buffet style service at a wedding is because it's dirt cheap. If they could afford better they would. They're nothing less classy than getting dressed up for an event and carrying your own food to a table like your at a Burger King.

I've been to lots of weddings in more than a dozen states, the nicest ones always have some sort of formal dining as part of the event. Dinner is usually sandwiched in between other less formal parts of the event.

Money dance has to be a Southern thing, right?

I've been to a bunch of weddings in Pennsylvania and Ohio.. and it's not a thing.

No.

I've been to at least a hundred weddings, mostly in Alabama but also in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. I'd never heard of this phenomenom until this thread.

It may occur in some places in the South, but it is not a Southern thing.

it's a louisiana thing for sure. about 50% of the weddings I've been to here have had the money dances. i just cringe for them and refuse to participate.

this is what I have seen as well...

one positive of a cash bar is that it does kind of curtail alcohol consumption so that some folks don't get quite so out of hand...

fully stocked bar> beer, wine> cash bar

If you are too poor to at least provide free beer then its probably best to just have a justice of the peace wedding.

As a GM/Bar Manager - I've booked MANY receptions that have had beer and wine but liquor operates on drink tickets followed by cash bar.

I have been to 2 formal sit down weddings and they were both of state. The other 50 or so in Louisiana have been buffet style and it had nothing to do with cost. Everyone from wealthy old money New Orleans families on down have had a buffet. Of course we have pretty good food at most reception venues.
Anyone else been to a wedding in South Louisiana in the last 10 years that had a formal sit down dinner in the middle of the reception? That wasn't an intimate event at a restaurant.

I can understand that. I mean, the wedding is for the bride and groom, not so some moron can get drunk and make a fool of themselves.

My poor FIL spent no telling how much on an open bar for my wedding. I tried to warn him that was probably not a wise choice given the low rents I am friends with but it was damn the torpedoes.

I married a girl from New Orleans if that matters. I don't think Rednecks from Mecca are used to open bars.

It's so creepy. My sister's mother in law wanted her to do it, and she flat out refused. It actually turned into a huge deal.

I think what you can afford is what you can afford. That being said though I am not real crazy about a total cash bar. I am however okay with free beer wine and you have to pay for hard liquor. My wedding coming up however is completely free with a fully stocked bar.
