However, every time I see a high end sports car with an automatic transmission, I chuckle. What a waste of money.

I pretend the flappy paddles on the steering wheel are triggers for a laser gun, and when I flap the paddles, little beams of destruction shoot out of the front of the car.
This is only in my Subaru Outback. My other cars don't have secret lasers.

Allows for slightly better performance and "fun" because you can hold it in a lower gear for higher revs.
This. Mine has paddle shifters on the steering wheel. If it weren't for that I probably wouldn't bother with manual.

lol @ automatics - learn how to really drive a vehicle and you'll never want an automatic again.
Its too hard to text, surf the web, and change gears.

on the highway "to get better gas millage"

I put it in manual mode once or twice a year for shits and giggles.
Not really much point with my 2 mile city commute or with highway driving.

Paddle shifters are fun. Most of the high end cars have transitioned to assisted automatic. It's kind of sad. I prefer to drive the car instead of the other way around. I guess I'm just nostalgic. Air cooled porches and Stick shift Ferraris are more appealing to me than the new bmw's that predict what I want to do.
This is true.
That said, I'm still gonna go with the M7.
Gotta have 3 pedals...

You're gonna be laughing a lot.
Manuals are virtually gone from the high end world.
Automatics are faster in just about every instance.

Probably useful while driving in mountain states.
I use it whenever I have to drive through Eastern Kentucky. Going up and down those hills, with constant gear shifts, kills your gas mileage.

That's a shame. I really don't care which is faster. It's just more fun driving a fast standard vehicle.

Agree 100%.

My first truck was a manual 5.2 V8 single cab Dodge Dakota. Man I had some fun in that truck. Could burn the tires all the way through 2nd gear.

This is exactly why I bought an automatic!

318s were bulletproof engines, and decently fast.
Especially in a light truck...
How about wet roads?
