I have a, don't touch my, Dart this week and like all modern automatics it has the manual mode. This time the plus is down and the minus is up. They really should disable this feature in rentals because holy shite it's tough to use. Of course it overrides you when you try to downshift into second going 60, but it will not override and shift up. Thank god for the rev limiter.

I use the manual mode in rentals just for the frick of it, but I can't see how anyone would use it daily. It's just a shitty version of an automatic. Why even have it?

I use it sometimes. It's basically just a toy, though.

Do you mean manual like "stick shift", the +/- buttons on the shifter, or do you mean paddle shifters like on the Ferraris?

Allows for slightly better performance and "fun" because you can hold it in a lower gear for higher revs.

My rig has 10 speed manual and my old truck had a 6 speed manual. lol @ automatics - learn how to really drive a vehicle and you'll never want an automatic again.

+/- on the gear selector. I'm sure a dual clutch fake manual drives insanely well.

wut

Its like people on horse drawn carriages yelling "That piece of metal will never be reliable like my horse!" at Henry Ford.

Its just easier and more relaxing to drive an automatic. I will want a manual wrangler one day as a weekend cruise around town car, but frick having a manual in heavy city traffic commutes to and from work.

Pointless in Louisiana
Probably useful while driving in mountain states.

Both of my vehicles are manuals. You can't rent them though.

Had a 2002 Passat with the triptronic transmission. It would still up shift on its own, just closer to redline. If you left it in 3 lets say and came to a stop. It would go back to first on its own. It basically just irritated the automatic transmission.

Paddle shifters are fun.
Most of the high end cars have transitioned to assisted automatic.
It's kind of sad. I prefer to drive the car instead of the other way around. I guess I'm just nostalgic. Air cooled porsches and Stick shift Ferraris are more appealing to me than the new bmw's that predict what I want to do.

I mostly use it in my camaro when trying to drag race. Using it for everyday driving is a little annoying. I have noticed on challengers that it is very easy to go into manual mode. On the camaro, you have to put it into manual mode on the shifter, then the paddles work. On the challenger, all you have to do is hit the paddles and it switches into manual mode. Seems a little dangerous.

My friend has an M6 GC and he opted for the crazy transmission, he loves it. It has different modes and he says the most aggressive setting is downright disturbing. Sounds fun. Probably need both hands on the wheel of something like that anyway. My 230hp BMW needs a stick though.

As long as I can, I'll never own an automatic for myself.

Disagree. I started with a standard and I'm happy with an automatic. Every now and then I wish I had a standard though.
