Rub it in.

Alex is a great town. But then again, I'm not as jaded as most people around here.

I don't think it is anymore. I know Outlaws in Pineville sells alcohol now. This has been recent

Crime is relegated to the hood. Not a dangerous city at all. Spirits is a great place to eat and drink, and Finnegan's Wake is a nice little bar to hang out in. Not a bad place to live at all.

Still technically dry but restaurants are allowed to sell alcohol now.

I have three cousins from there. All three left the first chance they had.
Join a hunting club and buy a boat because it really is sportsman's paradise. There just isn't much else there though.

Spirits is that best place for food and a few beers. Food it pretty good and not pricey. There's a place off 28 close to Magnolia Trace called Top Shelf that's not bad for a drink. They have 2 ok golf course the Links and Oak Wing.

Been working up there a year and it's serious the worst place ever. Do NOT move there.

I love the snobs that crap on Alexandria but have never really spent any real time here. No it's not the wonderful Baton Rouge with all it's traffic and snobs but it is improving. Downtown is cleaning up nicely with some nice bars and restaurants.

Spirits, Finnegans Wake, Bellinos and embers all good restaurants and bars. Some good apartments and neighborhoods. For a college student there's not the same level of going out as bigger cities but there's enough.

Crime is a problem everywhere in LA. Meth is a problem but more in smaller areas and parishes near here. I've lived all over this state with school and work and still returned here to live, work and raise my kiddos. My wife likes it here too. Just my two cents.

Bars- 1 bar...Finnegan's

Restaurants- 1 true restaurant (D.G.) and the new sandwich place.

I've heard Downtown A-town was developing my entire life, and at 28, this is what developing means.

I lived in Cenla for 22 years. It's not the worst place in the world, but the wife and I will never move back. I would not live in Alex itself. Pineville is an ok place to live (quieter, safer, and a smaller feel) and just past Alex down Hwy 28 West is starting to grow in terms of house development. There are a few local restaurants that have stood the test of time, but mostly there are chains. There is good outdoor life (hunting, fishing, etc) surrounding it, but in terms of a social scene, especially at night, the pickings are slim. If you're more of a homebody, it's a good place to live. If you are more of a going out person, the fun won't find you...

We actually live in Pineville. I was born and raised there. I agree the bar scene isn't great but I've got two young kids, we don't go out much!

Diamond grill is overrated. A few places have opened nearby like embers and crave. The city council is really pushing to open more shopping and night life along the levee in a "boardwalk" type of setting.

Lived in pineville going on four years. Thought we would move first chance we got but wife and I have good jobs and cost of living is hard to beat. good places to eat are very limited and so is the night life, but we have a small child and I went to lsu so I did my fair share of partying. I personally think pineville is better than Alex to live although you can only buy beer over here (in certain spots) good luck.....oh and if anyone tells you Julie's is the place to go for Mexican, tell them to eat shite and die ??

Debarge's has really good crawfish (when in season), and good boiled shrimp (get their dip). Their cracklin's are the best in Alex, that's not saying a whole lot.

Brocato's has good plate lunches and really good Philly cheese steak sandwiches. If you're working at LSUA Brocato's will not be an option for lunch. It's too far to make on a lunch hour.

Most people hunt, fish, or workout. Not much else to do.

If there has ever been anything you'd like to learn how to do, now is the time. Learn how to grill, cook, get a masters, play a musical instrument, work on improving yourself, or get in shape (if you're not already in shape). You will have plenty of time for this.

Robbie G's is good for seafood. Mirror Room at Bentley Hotel is not bad. Hotel is slowly reopening as remodeling is completed. Diamond Grill is not bad for dinner or drinks.

Not bad for a town of this size. Connect to Houston, Dallas, Memphis, or Atlanta.

Schools, not that bad.

I'm looking at apartments up there... say < $600/mo.

is there anything that fits that bill outside of the "bad areas" or in Pineville?

mapping it... I wouldn't be opposing living in Pineville... not too bad a drive to get to work at LSUA

ETA: FWIW I've lived in NOLA the vast majority of my life w/ about a year and a half in each Laffy and BR

is Alexandria (or even Pineville) even remotely close to living in... say... Laffy?

I forgot about that. Kisatchie is a great place to hike, bike, and camp.
