Get a Honda with the honda Sensing package.
Adaptive cruise control
Lane keep assist (essentially hands free driving)
Brake Hold (great for traffic lights)
Collision avoidance
A fully loaded Civic will run about 25-27K and you'll get 200K+ miles out of it.

I like the Lexus ES as well. Don't just buy with MPG in mind. Get something comfortable, and something Tha can also perform when you need it to. The Lexus is a great choice, and also does well with MPGs.

I commute about that or a little further every day. Currently I have a used 2008 carolla that's been great. I put 80k miles on it in four years. That said, my buddy bought a fully loaded accord with a 4cylinder and I wish I would have got that. Think he only paid 26k for it. Much roomier without sacrificing much mpg. Hope this helps

OP you are about to spend over 1 month of time each year just driving to work. 32 days at least of drive time if all added up.
I drive 140 miles per day commuting. I don't mind it at all. Got a used Lincoln mkz hybrid just for the commute. That commute in my wrangler was expensive to say the least.

I have a Honda Accord Touring model with sensing and it is great for my daily commute(35-50 miles each way per day). Highly recommended, and I bought an extended warranty to last until 120K.

Those do seem perfect for a long highway commute.

You should get a bad arse bike. Get a workout.

Similar commute to OP... 2 years ago I bought a used 14 Altima. It's a glorified golf cart, but I'm getting 40+mpg and have not had any issues. It's a lower end S model, but really all I was interested in was fuel economy and it has been great for that.

If I was spending 3hours of my life each day in a car, I would want comfort over 3 additional MPG's.
My wife (no pics) has a 70/mi one way commute. She drives a GMC Terrain bc I was stupid and didn't try harder to talk her out of it. It's not the worse vehicle I've ever owned but the GD pollution control system keeps throwing CEL's.
I tried to get her an Accord or a CRV but ultimately let her decide bc she is the one driving, not me...

Buying a $50k car to commute in seems smart...
If you're driving interstate then that car is going to get beat to hell over time.
Get something reliable and safe for about $20k.
If you can afford $50k then you can afford slightly worse gas mileage that comes with a small SUV.

Any and all cars will be beat to hell over time...
Highway miles are "easier" on a car than city driving with constant start and stops.

Buy something used, or real cheap so you can run the miles up on it. Don't spend a lot of money, you will be upside down for a long time, and won't come out ahead.

I used to make a the 74 mile trip back and forth to NO every day.
Got a used Altima for $3K, drove it for a year and a half before I got a promotion and company vehicle. it basically paid for itself in that time frame b/c my truck was guzzling gas for that first 2 months.
Without a doubt get a used Camry/Altima/Accord. Enough room to be comfortable, will get good gas mileage, and will last. Yeah you'll have issues from time to time. As long as it's not major, especially if you do them yourself, you'll be happy.
It would be beyond stupid to purchase a new vehicle to drive that much.

I'm with the others on the Accord. Much better car than the Camry, imo. We have the Touring - it's very comfortable on the highway and the 6 cylinder gets after it. Gets over 30mpg hwy.
