Camry or Prius. Unless you're a taller individual, I'm 6'3 and it's hard for me to cram into either of those.

I see 2016 Camrys going for 17K.

No point in spending 30K+ and rack on those kind of miles.

Honestly I have driven trucks since i got my license and have always loved them, always needed one as well. So my recommendation would be a Honda Accord Hybrid. You will save a bunch. It gets 49 mpg on the highway. Baseline MSRP is around $27,000 and $35,000 with all the gadgets so well within your price point. It has much better stereo and dash options. Also a very reliable honda made engine. Its got a much better ride than a prius, much better interior, better styling, and all around comfort. Also since its not a prius you won't have to tell all your friends you're gay.

70 miles a day, assuming 5 days a week,
car mpg = cost of gas per year (at current gas prices)

16 mpg = $2,377
24 mpg = $1,593
49 mpg = $780

Saving about $1,600 on gas alone and you will need less oil changes.

Now if you are making that drive 7 days a week you will save on gas $2,258 per year.

If it is 70 miles one way and 70 miles back you save $3,194

I'm Sorry to all the other peoples comments for being wrong but the facts are all there. clear winner.

If the Honda is comfortable to him. 140 miles / day is alot of seat time.

OP you are about to spend over 1 month of time each year just driving to work. 32 days at least of drive time if all added up.

70 per day not 140 I'm assuming that is both ways added up. Mathematical edits will be made accordingly.

70 miles isn't a big commute these days. Buy whatever you want, but make sure it is comfortable and fuel efficient.

Cars these days tend to last.

Nothing to it. I've been doing this for 11 years.

Honda Accord by far. My mother in law had a 2008 and because of work put 150k miles on it in 4 years. Still got $7,000 for the trade in. It's a great car and even better at holding its value for when you get a new one.

I would get a Camry or Accord. Most reliable and best fuel efficient, yet fairly comfortable ride.

I do it nearly everyday, probably a bit more (round trip though, not just one way). Had a VW TDI. Loved it for the mileage, but that's off the table now. Just picked up a Lexus ES350. Super comfortable and if you watch the lead foot, you can get 26~27mpg out of it (hwy/city mix). Paid less than 40k before tt&l for a decently equipped one. The Hybrid model was what I wanted, but was only available in a higher end package in the 2017 models. I had an excel spreadsheet and it took like 7 years before the price difference made the hybrid worth it.

Avalon hybrid was right at 40k as well. I didn't love the dash on the avalon, but otherwise, it was the same layout and space. Plus got great fuel mileage. But still, the equivalent non-hybrid was competitive cost wise for the first like 7 years.

If you can stand a smaller ride, it opens your options up a lot.

I make a similar commute each day. I had a Mustang that was getting shite mileage and it was starting to have issues. So a little over a year ago I got a Honda HRV. It's kind of a car/SUV hybrid. Pretty comfortable and I got it new for about 25K. I pay less than $20 a week for gas and I only have to change the oil about every 10K miles. Not a bad deal..

I drive 44 miles each way everyday

Get what you want because when you spend that much time in the vehicle you want to be comfortable and have a nice ride.

I don't look at it as an investment or worry about the mileage. To me it's just an expense that I'm comfortable paying.

I drive a GMC Sierra. So far, I'm getting about 22mpg

Salesman at the honda place literally told me "we don't really sell a lot of hybrids. If you want one of those, you just as soon go to Toyota." Plus, I'd heard accords aren't the greatest for road noise over time. To be honest though, I never even test drove the accord or Acura tlx.
