I would guess he's saying it looks dated bc it resembled the old XC90, and I believe they've been making the XC60 since the 09 year model.
Basically that yeah, especially considering how drastically different and improved the XC90 is, the current 60 is an ugly duckling of the group and is only going to get worse when the new one comes out.
Here's a link describing what I'm talking about LINK on a V60 which looks very similar to the XC60.
So you're basically getting a Ford designed Volvo and not one of those new good looking fords, a late 2000s ford.

Or Jeep Grand Cherokee. I'm looking to buy a new vehicle and narrowed it down to these 4 for the SO.
DUDE! Y'all pregnant?
My gf drives a Highlander. Hands down value winner right there. Do it. I would never recommend Jeep products to anyone other than someone looking for a 4x4 recreational toy. They do not hold up well on the commuter/soccer mom grind.
Congratulations on the birthday AND pregnancy! Can I post that on her FB wall?

There's a thread on Money Talk about repair work on XC 90 Volvos. I believe several folks chimed in complaining about exorbitant repair costs and mechanic work, and discussed their price and cost versus the build quality.
The consensus seemed to buck the trend of this thread: You're not paying for quality anymore. You're paying for the name.

Because these things are made for the American market at an unsustainable product cycle rate. A nice German sedan would run production almost ten years, and in the facelift years it would be dead nuts reliable since all the bugs were ironed out. Americans don't want ironed out understated luxury, they want a giant van type thing that says 'I'm super sporty, still luxurious, and OBVIOUSLY my ride is less than three years old."
Unfortunately the manufacturers have caught on, and wild profits abound off our market. New one in 3 years, check.

What about Honda Accords that have a model run a few years then get redesigned? Honda never really has to advertise about new styling bc the Accord will run for 20 years

Mom just bought a Higlander. Rides smooth. Nice SUV.

Bought my wife the highlander last year with the platinum package. Great equipment. Enough room for two kids.We have not had any problems thus far.

Just went through the research and driving for this class of vehicle and went with the MDX. The Highlander was very nice as was the Pilot but the wife wasn't in love with the look. Didn't look at Volvo bc I've owned a few and vowed to never own another one. They are expensive as hell to fix and don't have great resale.

Those are some good options.
FWIW, I have a JGC and so do three of my close friends, staggered in years from 2012-15. I've had one recall issue which was annoying, but none of us have seen serious reliability issues to date.
I can't say I'd necessarily choose it over the other options (I also looked at the XC90 and an MDX), but from my anecdotal experience reliability certainly increased post 2010.

I looked at several of these about 2 years ago and ended up with a Grand Cherokee. Here is my take on it though:
1. Acura MDX by a mile. Drives amazing and if you aren't offroad then it is far away the best driving of the four.
2. Highlander. a few years ago I would have put the Volvo here but the new ones are nice and roomy. Drive nice but I don't care for some of the interior stuff.
3. Volvo. It is a nice vehicle and they got most of the transmission issues dealt with.
4. Cherokee. Much smaller than you would imagine. I went from a Range Rover to the Limited Cherokee and wanted to get rid of it within months. I am going to end up trading it towards a new work truck and keep my 2011 F150 for now.
The only SUV that I tried that I liked better than the Acura was the X5 but I am no where near a BMW dealer so that hindered that decision.

They are a lot smaller than the others (except XC60).

I prefer the Toyota Sequoia if you can swing it

I walked in the Price Leblanc showroom to test drive a Highlander.... 4 and 6 cyl Highlanders and v8 4runner later, I drove off in a Sequoia.
If gas stays under $3/gallon for next 5 yrs, go for it.

problem with the highlander is you need to get the highest package to get the captain chairs

My GF drives a used Highlander with 3rd row and 2nd row Captains Chairs(convertible to Bench for seating 3. It's VERY functional and cool how it works).
It's not a top package, cloth 4cyl no nav or fancy shite.

We bought the '16 MDX and we've put about 3k miles on it so far. It drives really well and we are happy.
The reliability concerns and repair costs kept us out of the Volvo. The minivan-like design kept us out of the Highlander.
We never considered the Jeep because the record of theft from the taxpayers and their terrible reliability track record.
