Jesus's message of Heaven and Hell resonated with the poor

So the heaven and hell terminalogy he used was not metaphorical? I studied all this years ago but dont remember. My professor was a Jesuit who studied from the greek text.It was extremely interesting stuff and made me see Jesus in a very different light

It's funny how a fossil discovery will turn into a religious debate, like clockwork.

It's why it's best to keep science and religion separate. Religion too often serves to just delay and derail scientific progress.

Heaven and hell were not metaphors. Heaven and Hell were the destinations in the afterlife. Prior to Jesus's death, all people went to Hell due to their sins which ll included original sin (this is Catholicism 101). Not the worst part of Hell, but still hell. Because he was born free of original sin and lived a life free of unrepentant sin, Jesus, after his descent into hell, freed the good souls there who were there only because of original sin and they were allowed to ascend to the Kingdom of Heaven. Rather than Jesus following them to heaven immediately, he returned to Earth, rose from the dead, and spent 40 days on earth before Ascending to Heaven with the promise that he would one day return to build the physical Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.

Not sure exactly how I feel about all of it, but that's the meat of the subject. Personally, I'm conflicted due to the fact that the bible never mentions purgatory, but it seems like something I "want" to be true. Purgatory of course being the place where most should go when they die where they prey until they can atone for all of their sins and eventually make it into heave. It's kinda like an Amnesty program for citizenship in Heaven. There's a waiting period and you have to wait in a certain area, but good people who aren't perfect can make it in. Hell would therefore only be reserved for the worst of the worst. Those who do evil for evil's sake, hypocrites, "ends justify the means" types, and those who at their death still deny God despite getting a choice in the afterlife. I don't know, I'm just kind of rambling now.

It was snarky on the first 2 pages, but it really turned into a pretty pleasant derail after that about the origins of faith and the philosophy behind it. Pretty enlightening thread.

It never fails though. Someone posts cool science article. D-bag internet atheists and evangelicals come in fishing for trolls and post offensive, snarky comments ridiculing the other side. Crazy "Christian" (or just some random troll trying to poke fun at Christians) comes in claiming the Earth is 2000 years old some bull shite, the Atheists rip him apart (understandably), and all of the reasonable people get ignored while one evangelical white knights for Christianity while the thread turns into a pissing match between him and all of the atheists. Thankfully, that didn't actually happen in this thread.

It's been pleasant discussion but I do stand by my original dbag internet atheist(not really an atheist) comment. I dont see the point in trying to answer scientific questions through scripture. Scripture has the answers(or their version of it). Science is still looking

I think the best way to sum up the debate between Christians and Scientists, particularly the factions of each that believe the two to be irreconcilable and mutually exclusive, is the phrase from the great philosopher, Socrates, who said "As for me, all I know is that I know nothing." In the end, that's all any one of us knows with any certainty.

Any believers in this thread, feel free to read my sig. Faith limits spiritual growth, as backwards as that sounds.

So a murdered with faith is saved and a good atheist burns?

I find this article hard to believe. Wasn't there a scientific consensus? I'm pretty sure this group of scientists are deniers. Likely funded by big ...

That makes you no different than the God hates figs crowd. You are a sinner, you contribute to the brokenness of the world, yet you think that you're better than another sinner. You are not.

God loves you and wants you in spite of this and you think that sucks because someone not as good as you think you are is loved too. The funny thing is that atheists like to call Christian narcissists. What is more narcissistic that this?
