We usually keep 5 as WRs and then a 6th as a return man/gunner (guys like Lewis and Roby). We actually kept 5 in 2009, 2010, and 2013 and 6 the other years.

Being that our depth is not great and there is no return man at receiver worth keeping, we'll go with 5 again this year.

Graham had absolutely zero bearing on how many we kept, as evidenced by the fact we only kept five once while he was the starter (and six three times). You're making stuff up.

People have been saying Coleman has been a lock at WR and will be the #3 guy since training camp. He has done next to nothing during the preseason and has been outplayed by most of the other guys. Is this "Coleman is a Lock" talk just carry over from training camp or has anyone seen anything that makes them think he's better than Joe Morgan or Jalen Sunders?

Offense:
Drew Luke Grayson
RB:

WR:
Cooks, Colston, Snead, Coleman, Joe Morgan (i've come around to joe making this team. all around wr, blocks well, speed, run after catch etc)
TE:
Jesus, Hill, Charles
OL:
Strief, Armstead, Unger, Evans, Lelito, Kelemete, Peat (kelemete hasn't looked so great but we have no backup C than him)

Better than Joe Morgan or Snead (or even Josh Morgan for that matter)? Nope. All have looked better than one catch Coleman. Saunders? Yeah he looks better than Saunders and has size on him.

Fun fact: Joe Morgan and Snead are tied for the lead in catches in preseason at 8 a piece. And Joe has been doing it with short routes showing he isn't a one trick pony.

I still think Coleman makes it over Josh Morgan simply for upside and the fact Josh has not stood out. Though I think Jones has an outside shot of snaking the fifth spot from him.

I think Colston, Cooks, Joe Morgan and Snead are locks. I'd honestly think I'd take Saunders over Coleman at this point just because he can return kicks. Coleman brings size, but that does no good if he can't catch a damn football. Just my 2 cents though.

On Josh Morgan, he has looked good and bad at times. A couple of drops and the fumble but he has made catches.

Coleman has been basically a non factor. That's why production wise Josh is ahead of him but I think potential will keep Coleman ahead of him as the production is just a blip.

On the WRs, we are going to carry 5 actual WRs just in case of injury.

Saunders has shown jack squat as a WR (does he even have a catch) and he has been sucking at kick returns (but it could be blocking; still Murphy has showed out far better there), but is still a good punt returner. So he isn't going to make it over Murphy as a kick returner and he isn't going to make it over anyone as the 5th receiver.

So unless we keep 6 WRs there is zero chance for Saunders. Coleman, Josh Morgan, and Jones are ahead of him.

I think the order looks like:

Colston
Cooks
Coleman
Snead
Joe Morgan

Snead has too good of hands and runs good routes. He deserves some playing time, and he reminds me of Lance Moore. Not a burner, not big, but if you throw something his way he's going to catch it.

Joe Morgan just because they need another burner besides Cooks and he is a proven commodity and Saunders has looked bad, even on kick returns.

There is no denying Snead's talent. He is a natural receiver and will achieve success at this level if he is given a real chance. I will be extremely disappointed if he is not a Saint. But given our lack of depth at the position, I think Payton will make his selections based more on what they have done on a daily basis at practice. I mean, how many series has Brees played this preseason? Maybe 4. I have a feeling Coleman, Joe, and Hill have more catches if Brees played more. With regards to Coleman, he has way too much upside and the Saints have invested way too much time to not see what he can do during the regular season. At least I hope so. His size should give him an advantage with all other things equal. As long as those two make team and Toon doesn't, I'm a happy camper.

If it's based on practice then Snead is DEFINITELY making the team. He has been providing it in practice and in games. He can play.

And you haven't seen any of the practices either. I said when camp started Saunders isn't making this team and with Murphy returning kicks I feel even more comfortable in that.

Saunders isn't making this team, he's got one skill and that's returning kicks. The Saints have Murphy, Cooks, Morgan and Spiller capable of returning kicks.

Either Jones or Coleman will be the Saints #3 WR after camps over.

Just don't get your hopes up about Toon, he's a bust that the Saints can't let go just yet.

And yet Payton said it's one thing to see it in practice but he needs to see something from them in actual games.

Coleman isn't the first practice star we've had.

He'll likely make the team just based on the rest of the guys and Toon's injury, but if this was a four man race he'd be outside looking in.

Dude, Coleman will be on the field on the first drive vs the Cardinals.

According to preseason stats, Coleman and Saunders both have one catch.

Murphy has 7 kick returns for 26.3 yards per return and a long of 32 yards while Saunders has had 5 kick returns for 26.4 yards per return and a long of 50 yards.

With out saying anything about size/speed and practice, is there any legit reason why we would keep Saunders over Coleman at this point?

I'm big on the Coleman pain train, and think he will make the 53 man roster. However, against the Cardinals, I think he'll be inactive. Colston and Cooks are #1 and #2. WR#3 will depend on the situation. Snead as the possession receiver and Morgan as another burner. Coleman's day will come if any of the above four get dinged. I still have great faith in the fella, I just think you can't deny what Snead brings to the table.

Potential. They like Coleman's potential more than Saunders, especially since we have someone who can do what Saunders does in the return game and is a better receiver (albeit at a different position).

And I must have missed the 50 yarder. What game was that? Beginning of the pats game? Because I did miss the beginning of that one.

Also Murphy would have a better average if it wasn't for all the god damn holds.
