Yea wouldn't mind him being a backup DE for pass rushing situations or to just give someone a breather.

I agree, I thought Richardson, Johnson, and Atkins moved very well.

I think Vilma has to go as well, the young LBs need more reps.

Because of his salary, cutting him really isn't an option but he needs to learn to play 3-4 DE or not be on the field at all. He will just be too much of a liability at OLB.

The problem is, Our DL has plenty of talent already.

I still say we fatten Smith up and drop him at NT.
You know he would jump at the opportunity.

Other than maaaybe Vilma this year (and Lofton's an obvious lock), I'm all for going youth and athleticism with our LB's and taking our lumps this year.

Well let him be a backup/rotational player. He just won't cut it as an OLB.

That sounds intriguing but he already shows a serious lack of explosion. Fatten him up & the only time he will be explosive is when his fat arse hits the toilet.

I understand the dead money, but every other linebacker is a better option at this point. so we'd have to cut a better player to keep him on the roster. This makes no sense if we're trying to win football games.

Truth.

He looked very slow and out of place last night. I don't hate the guy or anything, but it's time to part ways.

Too old and too slow. If he starts at OLB, things will get ugly.

Finally watching the game right now. Haven't seen Vilma yet.

Yeah, he's actually not a total waste. He has some nice size (6'3 241) and decent speed. Not the best at shedding blocks though. He is a special teams asset.

Back to Smith, you also have to consider he could possible still pick up with a 4-3 team, so seeing what you saw last night, I'd let him go and give him a chance to pick up with someone else.

Honestly, the cap hit is pretty much neutral however you go with him.

If he's on the field as an OLB, he's a liability.

If he's backing up at DE, he MIGHT be an asset.

I don't see anyone trading for him.

Who DOESN'T make the team if Smith does? To me, if any of the young OLBs show some flash in the next couple weeks, you have to let Smith go, take the cap hit, and move on.

Pretty much. He was set to make more this year and took a paycut to stay. I'm not sure if his paycut was more than his original cap hit.

Either way, you don't keep a player that isn't going to work just because you already spent money on him. I guess the Saints felt like he deserved a shot. I just think now you have to come to grips with reality on the field. Smith hasn't been in the best shape over the past 3-4 years, and even though he's dropped weight, he's still too big and slow to play the position. His age and being out of shape has caught up with him.

People have said that his duties won't change that much, but he's been sucking at his duties since 10'.

Send a message to the team and purge the dead weight.

With the loss of K. Coleman he should be on the D-line. The only place where I see he could be effective, maybe. If that does not happen, I don't believe he will make the final 53 roster.

And yes, he'll go to some other team who plays a 4-3 and needs a DE, but that's the biz.

We have to make decisions with our heads, not our hearts. We also have to take the long view.

Did anybody see Chris chamberlain last night he played in the third quarter in the same spot Willl played in and got a lot of pressure out there. Will smith needs to go . Harper too. That money save lock up jimmy for awhile.

I honestly don't know where he would pick up. He's a sub par 4-3 DE at this point in his career. I think a team would have to be real thin at the position.

I said from the beginning he was best suited for 34 end. I've been fearing that this Harper, Smith, Vilma loyalty from the coaches would be as bad as the Shanle loyalty. I told someone after the game that it was depressing watching Will Smith's fata$$ trying to play OLB. Supposedly he lost weight, but he still looks fat to me.
