TIFWIW, but I interned for the Saints for two seasons from 2007-2008, and I can confirm everything you posted was true. I had personal experience with the damn smoothie nonsense.

From everything that has been written lately, this is a good move by Tom. It will be much appreciated by the fan base.

Bottom line is this is a great day for the franchises future. Gayle is a true "Saint" and is genuine and the type thats never met a stranger and makes it a point to stop and talk with everyone around the facility and she'll stay out of the way and let the football people run the football team. Well done Tom

I guess when you have the gold, you can make the rules. That said, whether Rita deserved it or not, it gives the appearance that TB handles these things poorly, ie kicking her to the curb in broad daylight. The Randy Mueller episode had similarities.

Meh. Don't be an a-hole when the world is handed to you on a silver platter, and shite like this doesn't happen to you.

A few years ago she was the rock star of the NFL. She did this to herself

Story was about to break in the media so they wanted to control the narrative as much as possible. Rumors have been circulating around New Orleans since the middle of last week. Not way to really spin something like this

I saw her pre-game interview before the Superbowl. She was charming, articulate and engaging and a great spokesperson for the city and the team - much more so than the old man could ever hope to be. This is disappointing to hear.

I've heard some other things about why she probably wouldn't be great candidate. Maybe they got tired of waiting for it to change

Yeah thanks to the old man giving her every opportunity she could ever hope for in life and she still managed to screw it up.

Wow, you're really trying to put this all on Tom here?

Never did like the man, but it's his to do with as he pleases. I do think it's a shame the someone (Rita) with so much potential winds up in this spot, whether or not she brought it upon herself.

See, I feel the opposite. I think, ultimately, this makes TB look good. He's not going to just let some count granddaughter take over without earning it. And Benson handled the Randy Mueller situation in the only way he could. Benson said as little as possible about what really happened. His mistake in that situation was not getting rid of Haslett too.

but a good friend of mine told me yesterday that there is a huge coup within the family and that the net result would be Rita being shown the door...

That would be awesome. She would be a disaster as owner/president/CEO or whatever for the Saints.

Potential? Why, because her grandfather made a few lucky deals and reaped a huge profit? That family is not rich with genius. Had it not been for Tom, they'd have likely been below average, imo.

They did a great job keeping it under wraps, since her office was cleared out a week ago.

I had heard Rita was kinda into chicks, then Benson is Mr. Super Conservative...could that play into it?
Gayle gets a lot, family gets the shaft.
I wonder what really happened.

Just look at the Buss family and their fight for ownership of the Lakers and the impact it's had on the team now. The succession to one individual (Gayle) is good for the franchise.

I think it was handled very well. It has been well documented for the past few seasons that Benson moved Rita all over the franchise in an effort to find her a "place".

There is no way news like this doesn't go public, so he has to try and work Rita and co. out of the mix quickly and thoroughly while also making it clear that he is not "cutting them off" but severing their interests in the two pro franchises.

He's clearly in deteriorating health and obviously it could be viewed that Gayle is puppeting Tom to oust the step-daughter and put her in control. It could have a "wicked stepmother" vibe if you choose to read it that way.

But the Saints organization has seemed very leery of Rita over the past few seasons. Payton tried to get a "Rita clause" put in his last contract extension. The league put the skids on that, but clearly things weren't going well in the executive offices.

I wouldn't be shocked if the league was involved in some way advising on this succession. If she'd made folks in New Orleans uneasy, it's possible that the sentiment in league offices was similar.

However you slice it, Benson made a decision that will hopefully eliminate a power struggle after he's gone (which might not be long). I'd be shocked if there isn't something in the succession that prohibits Rita and her mom and whatnot from suing over this. Like, maybe they forfeit their inheritance if they do.

I think he (or his advisors) handled it well. Death brings out the worst in family.

Wait until after his death and that side of the family sues claiming undue influence on Gayle's part and that he was demented. They'll bring in some forensic psychiatrist or psychologist to testify he was incompetent and a nasty fight will ensue.

I hope he had a psychiatric eval just prior to changing his will.
