This may be a completely unsubstantiated rumor... and I am prefacing this post as a rumor...

but a good friend of mine told me yesterday that there is a huge coup within the family and that the net result would be Rita being shown the door...

Anyone else hearing these whispers?

I support anything that gets her out of the picture.

i have serious reservations about what happens to the team after Mr. Benson dies regardless of Rita.

I think the Saints/Pelicans/Benson Towers deal makes it very difficult to move the team. Unless people just want to cash out at that point.

the state gave the family the building in exchange for not making the inducement payments, correct?

regardless, he doesn't have anyone in his family who i trust to be competent at running the team, which makes them far more willing to sell the team for $1 billion and just be done with it, in which case there is no one in the area with the money to buy it.

Your opinion on whether they're competent doesn't make them more likely to sell.

That deal also included an extension with the state through 2025

it doesn't but the idea that the team is going to a "trust" instead of being left to someone doesn't make it seem like anyone has a great interest in being the owner.

wtf is that supposed to mean? people who aren't necessarily interested in owning a football team would be more willing to sell than those who are.

and a new deal will likely require substantial upgrades to the dome (again) or a new stadium.

but would an ownership change void that?

Can't imagine the state would've bet on Benson making it to 97.

If the team is going into a trust, it would be to ensure that the team couldn't be sold and would stay in the Benson family.

A new stadium wouldn't be beneficial to the owner unless it is built in the exact same spot with development of Benson Tower and Champions Square.

Renovations to the Dome will continue to happen. Hell, they just put another $350 million into it.
