Rockets will undoubtedly match.

All indications are that the Rockets will have to choose between JSmoove and KJ. Smoove is the obvious choice given his playoff performance last season. He would eat up the full MLE. If he leaves for another team, they will likely match KJ's deal. If Smoove stays, we will be able to offer more money and, possibly more importantly, more playing time.

If we sign KJ, I hope that it's to a lengthy deal.

Any updates on this? Have we actually offered him yet?

Didn't see anything on hoops hype or twitter.

He seems to be a hustler and a rim protector. ...I would say give him an offer.

I think it's a little odd that it's leaked we plan to offer. If KJ had time to follow Seth Curry on Twitter, he had time to sign an offer sheet. Perhaps we're wanting to engage Houston in S&T talks?

This...

The fact that Hou currently has the money to match, leads me to believe that if we do end up with KJ, it will be through a S&T....For who???? No clue...

That's my fear as well.

The initial report said he was antsy to sign the offer sheet. I have to assume there's no news because we haven't offered yet which is concerning.

ETA: could be working a cole sign and trade. I think Gentry said Reke will be playing a lot of point guard, maybe they see Cole as expendable.

IF Jrue is healthy, then Cole is expendable, especially if we're trading for someone we think will earn SF minutes and push Tyreke and possibly QPon into more backcourt minutes. As much as I like Cole, most seem to think he'll be a cap casualty next year, so if we can lock in what would essentially be a replacement draft pick for $2.5ish per year in exchange for Cole, it's a decent exchange. You essentially traded Salmons for a mid-late 1st. I'd rather have it all, but sometimes you have to give to get.

The only S&T options we really have left are

Cole
or
Toney Douglas + Withey or Babbitt and/or future 2nd

If that's the deal then you have to do it. KJ has the potential to be a stud if he continues to develop. Jump shot has good form and should improve if he works hard.

At this point I Suppose Cole is what he is. A nice player off the bench.

Initially I was worried QP would be involved which I would hate.

Yep. Gentry did say that reke will play the 1-3 positions. Maybe they are thinking reke would be able to start at pg if Jrue misses time.

I wouldn't do it for Pondexter and I don't think Demps would either. KJ has a higher ceiling but we know what QPon brings now and trading him for an unknown is a potential step back with SF being so thin still. I don't know if I'd say Demps/Gentry are on the hot seat, but if they don't get to around 50 wins and make the playoffs, it could get ugly.

I thought we gave this option up when we pulled the QO to Withey...

The plan now (per sources) is to match on KJ McDaniels and look at trade options, opportunities. They'll be patient.

So we either need to find a trade piece Houston wants or wait for Houston to pay Josh Smith so they don't have the ability to match.

He is the definition of replacement level player. You give Norris Cole up every single time if you think there is a better option available. McDaniels is a better option.

Not to you, ATL, but just in general: they can't keep their 3rd string PG because they fear the starter may get hurt again. If you're playing your 3rd string PG, things are shitty no matter who it is.

Barring major injuries I'd say we are a lock for the playoffs at this point.

Two playoff teams from last year are undoubtedly going to miss them next year. There's 9 playoff worthy teams in the West imo, and we're definitely not the 9th team.

We still have his "non-bird rights", yes that's a thing It's like when we didn't pick up Aminu's option but still signed him to a one year deal.

quote:

NON-BIRD EXCEPTION -- This is also a component of the Veteran Free Agent exception. Its name is somewhat of a misnomer, since Non-Bird really is a form of Bird rights. Players who qualify for this exception are called "Non-Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA. They are veteran free agents who are neither Qualifying Veteran Free Agents nor Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agents, and include the following:

Players who finished the season with a given team, who have played no more than one season without clearing waivers or changing teams as a free agent.
Players who were Early Bird free agents, but whose team renounced its right to use the Early Bird exception to re-sign the player.
Players who were to be Larry Bird or Early Bird free agents, were playing on one-year contracts, and were traded mid-season.

This exception allows a team to re-sign its own free agent to a salary starting at up to 120% of his salary in the previous season2 (not over the maximum salary, of course), 120% of the minimum salary, or the amount needed to tender a qualifying offer (if the player is a restricted free agent -- see question number 44), whichever is greater. Raises are limited to 4.5% of the salary in the first year of the contract, and contracts are limited to four seasons when this exception is used.

Turning your 3rd PG into KJ is something you should be able to survive. Turning your starting SF (QPon) into KJ would only work if KJ blew up, otherwise you're taking a step back and endangering your playoff lock status.

Right, if Jrue is healthy and reke is running the 2nd unit off the bench then Cole's role is significantly reduced anyway.

Key factor in everything is Jrue being healthy.
