I think it was David Crosby that said "when Sgt. Pepper's came out, everyone else just said "we give up." there was no competing with that.

I think this is overstated. Beatles for Sale, e.g., is a great album. "No Reply" in particular already showed a great knack for melancholy wrapped up in a shiny package.

That's often true.

But bad taste or good taste aside, focking girls in their 20s do not listen to the beatles. I'm not asking you to draw any conclusions based on this fact. I'm simply stating it as a fact.

I wasn't doubting the veracity of the statement. I'm simply noting that it's one I find quite ridiculous.

When I was either in middle school or high school I asked my dad what the best beatles album was. He said Sgt Peppers and handed me the cd.

I was not impressed then.
I have listened to it subsequently, and with the intent to (read: hope that I would) enjoy it.
I remain unimpressed to this day

I like the Beatles a lot. However, my parents who were young during the Beatles era claim that they were just a boy band... basically the One Direction of their day.

It kind of makes sense, seeing that they always show a bunch of teeny bopper girls crying and passing out at their concerts.

Lol. Maybe you just hang out with dummies. When I was in college, pretty much every female in our group of friends loved the beatles.

Well, when they FIRST came out that's a fairly accurate statement. But you DO realize of course that their sound DRASTICALLY changed from how it started out, right?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding "boy band." Yes, they were young guys in a band and they were extremely popular, especially with adolescent girls. Is that what makes them a boy band? Because the Beatles didn't dance and lip sync their way to fame until popular tastes changed. However simple the early stuff may seem to some modern ears, it was a new sound for the time. Most songwriters couldn't come up with a melody like "I Saw Her Standing There" or "Please Please Me" to save their lives, then or now. They paid their dues in the bars and clubs of Liverpool and Germany for years before the teenage set in the US even knew who they were. The Beatles weren't some bubblegum sideshow that became a real band when they starting taking LSD.

To call the Beatles a boy band is laughable. The Beatles weren't formed to appeal specifically to teenage girls like the modern boy bands. They were formed by young men from Liverpool who had a love for American music, and wanted to play in that style. The musical act wasn't geared toward teenage girls, despite its popularity with them.

The Beatles were formed when performers wore stage costumes. Their last live performance before a paying audience was in 1966. So footage of them performing shows reflects the standards of the era. In hindsight it may appear calculated or gimmicky, but everyone did it at the time, or hadn't you noticed the Beach Boys and their uniform clothing?
