Musically far ahead of their time. The Lennon McCartney songwriting machine helped as well.
I feel like they've been marginalized today because of the Love and One compilations. Take ever Beatles song ever made. Put it on a play list and just about ever damn one of them is a gem. There are some stinkers for sure, but the sheer volume of great, timeless songs is astounding.

I enjoy the Beach Boys and Surfin USA was probably one of the first, if not THE first song I ever really knew and could recognize as a young boy, but something that is common among some of my favorite artists and groups is the ability to sound different in many songs or play different genres. While the Beach Boys certainly varied the way that their music sounded, I was never a huge fan of every song having the same harmonizing vocals and overdubs. Their sound was a little too "niche" sounding for me (and I am probably butchering what I am trying to say), and sounds a little too surf rock n' roll throughout their catalog. That is why I prefer the Beatles. I like that each member of the group had songs on which they sang and I like that each of them had hits in their own right. Now, in defense of the Beach Boys, and in an effort to try and not discredit their incredible music portfolio, I am not as nearly familiar with the Beach Boys catalog as I am with the Beatles, so who knows, maybe I will change my mind as I look into them more.

I think it was his excited awareness of the Animals' electric version of "House Of The Rising Sun" that led him in that direction.

I have reasonably good taste in music but I've never owned a single Beatle's album and never will. Couldn't care less.

You are a unique rebel. We are all in awe.

Led Zepp started out copying blues artists. Beatles were totally original.
The Beatles also invented rap.

You have reasonably good taste? Not completely good, just reasonably good?
What aspects of your musical taste would you describe as shitty?

The ability of The Beatles to adjust their sound and make brilliant music in completely different genres will never be seen again.

Listen to sergeant Pepper reprise

In the interest of time (since listening to all the albums would take a while) go listen to Past Masters Vol 1 and 2 from top to bottom in one sitting.
And then realize that they accomplished all of this in basically a decade. That many timeless songs, recording innovation, and completely evolved as a band like 4 times within a decade. It would be damned impressive if it was over a 30 year period.
It's mind boggling. There has never been anyone before or since accomplish something like that. I don't think there ever will be.

Maybe Duke or Miles but not at that level.

The Beach Boys influenced the Beatles. Beatle Ed(Paul) has said as much.

Maybe a little nascent rap in there, but that was a cultural phenomenon of New York and Los Angeles from the seventies to the nineties. It started out as a product of the times. But the Beatles pioneered so much and are one of my top three favorite groups of all time, so I will give it to them.

I believe that´s what the poster was referring to.
The Hey Bulldog banter at the end, was good as well.

Is that why the Beatles earliest records had a bunch of covers on them?
