Ask the top bands over the last 40 years which band influenced them more--Beach Boys or Beatles? I'm betting the majority would name the Beatles.

Of course, this is only one yardstick of many to gauge influence, impact, etc. But it's one I'd give credence to.

Yeah, they had a "God Only Knows". Which is better.

Paul McCartney might even agree.

There would be no Pet Sounds without the Beatles influence.

I like Beatles and Beach Boys.

Beatles didnt sing as well but they had a lot more cool songs overall. They played more of their instruments vs everything being a Brian Wilson composed orchestra.

The song Let it Be with the horns is something iconic that I dont find in the Beach Boys. Beatles also did a lot of great soul music like Dont Let Me Down.

The Beach Boys vocals and Wilson compositions are pretty damn good though.

So I listen to both of them.

Lester Bangs on nostalgia for Beatlemania (1981)

His last line is certainly provocative

The Beatles were, beyond doubt, greater. But they had two (and then three) people pushing each other creatively.

The Beach Boys had Brian Wilson trying to be creative, while dipshit Mike Love and big daddy Mury Wilson wanted them to be an oldies acts almost from Day One.

Wilson was a genius, but finally said WTF.

yet I have friends who claim The Beach Boys are far more influential.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band made Brian Wilson have a mental breakdown and shite in his pants.

It was actually more the other way around :

quote:

Paul McCartney has frequently stated his affinity with the album, citing "God Only Knows" as his favorite song of all-time, and crediting his uniquely melodic bass-playing style to the album. He acknowledged that it was the primary impetus for the Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band[151] The album also influenced their Revolver album.[

Did McCartney admit to locking himself in his room and crying for days?

I do not hold the latter opinion but what are some of the main arguments to prove the former?

The Beatles pioneered multi-track recording.
The track "Revolution" is the first recorded use of distortion in a recording.
"I Feel Fine" is the first recorded intentional use of feedback in a music recording.
They popularized the "Rockumentary"
They had such a string of #1 hits that will never be seen again.
They showed endless potential to innovate and evolve their sound from album to album.
To the uneducated ear, it is difficult to tell that the following songs are even by the same band due to the vast differences in style: "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", "Long Tall Sally", "Helter Skelter", "Yellow Submarine", "She's So Heavy", "Eleanor Rigby", "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds", "Help", "Revolution", ect.

The Beatles got Bob Dylan to go electric. Think about that for a moment. The most influential folk singer-songwriter on the planet was inspired to change his approach to music by the Beatles.

I think the Beatles were also responsible for driving the Stones to great heights (don´t get me wrong, Jagger was a conniving and ambitious mofo, but I think the ´competition´ was very, very beneficial).

The Beatles, along with the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin are the most influential bands of the last fifty years. No doubt.

This rooftop inpromptu concert with Billy Preston in London,January 30,1969,was their last live performance.

The went in the Studio and put out some great Music. They basically changed music overnight when they'd put out a new and different Album.

Yea, but let's not forget the other half of the equation. Dylan had a profound impact on the evolution of their songwriting. It was kind of a trade off, and we all won as a result.
