It'd actually be an insult to call him underrated, but Josh Freese is easily the most talented drummer of the last 25 years.

This is false. He's a great drummer that cuts his teeth doing studio work, so no one really knows about him. But he is not the most talented drummer of the last 25 years.

Dire Straits-Terry Williams
Poco-George Grantham
Jimi Hendrix Experience-Mitch Mitchell

I don't know where these guys stand, but they are way up on my lists.

I'll have to say Matt Abts from Gov't Mule. " Thorazine Shuffle " was amazing.
Reading a lot of Modern Drummer mag. I'll add
Steve Smith ( Journey)

Abts is deceptively skilled. Nowadays, he makes his playing look so effortless due to the lack of energy and passion that most drummers seem to exude. Anyone who is part of a trio with Warren Haynes has to possess some serious musical chops.

It looks like I'm going to be the one to say it...nearly every extreme or progressive metal drummer is underrated to those who don't routinely listen to metal genres.

The technical skill, speed, agility, precision, and power tied to some of these players is nearly inconceivable.

Anyway, here are some drummers of more familiar bands I would nominate:

David Silveria - Korn (dude had a funky manner of playing that fit well with the rhythm-centric nature of Korn)

Tim Alexander - Primus (it's not easy playing along Les & Larry, but Tim holds his own)

Would Glenn Kotche be considered underrated? Or is it just accepted he's pretty freaking awesome.

David Lovering. Never considered (less than underrated), and had a great, solid sound.

Has no one mentioned the drummer from TAUK? He's the best drummer I've ever seen live, he puts on one hell of a show.

don't know about in bands, but here's my choice

"How many drummers does it take to change a lightbulb?" joked Phil Collins. "Ten. And then another ten to talk about how Steve Gadd would have done it."

His time is so bad they had to use a click on everything with him. Gordon told my old man this story years ago.

My favorite track Gadd played on is 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. That groove is amazing
