As far as the mention of Jimmy Miller/Charlie Watts.... great point.

The Stones were a fairly loose group, sometimes songs took place with whoever was there. Sometimes Richards played bass, sometimes he played all guitars. If everyone was in the house, Charlie would be on the kit.

With Jagger, Richards, and the various leads, there isn't a helluva lot of room for Charlie.

I think it was Miller who played drums on Gimme Shelter

Actually, the big hits he played the full drum kit on were You Can't Always Get What You Want and Tumbling Dice.

(ETA: Miller is credited with playing percussion on Gimme Shelter, just not drums. He played percussion on a shite ton of Stones' songs - famously the cowbell in Honky Tonk Woman.)

Miller also played on Shine A Light.

But that in no way discredits Watts. Richards for instance did not play on the tune at all. There is also some debate on how accurate Jagger's album credits were given the environment in which they were recorded.

Barrimore Barlow - Tull

Jerry Shirley - Humble Pie

Stewart Copeland - The Police

People who play the drums hold him in really high regard, but I guess from a popular culture standpoint, he is underrated.

I was always a big fan of his sound, both technically and aesthetically.

Saosins drummer is really good too bad they can't get a singer who isn't a addict

And Anthony Green went on to better things.

Glenn graham of Blind Melon. Very underrated drummer. He does some amazing drum work on the entire Soup album.

I don't think there's any doubt about You Can't Always Get What You Want.

"Jimmy Miller sat down at the drums and remained there playing on the take. Charlie was not happy but was graceful about it. Mick and Keith played acoustic guitars, I played piano, Bill was on bass and Brian lay on his stomach in the corner reading an article on botany throughout the proceedings. I then overdubbed the organ."- Al Kooper

If Al doesn't know, nobody knows. Charlie claims that Miller wasn't a good drummer, but was good at playing drums on the record. Another arrow in the quiver of one of the absolutely strangest cats in rock and roll history (and I'm talking about Watts, here.) Think about what he said. He couldn't play the track. He didn't define being a good drummer as being good on the record. So he considered himself a touring drummer? Strange, weird little dude.

Since you mentioned underrated, there's no doubt in my mind it's Jerry Mercer from April Wine.
