The Artist or Million Dollar Baby. Of course both of those movies won in extremely weak years for Best Picture but I just never understood the hype for those movies. They were very underwhelming winners.

The 80s was generally a weak decade for movies period. After the success of Star Wars, all of the studios started pumping our formulaic kiddie fare. There were lots of entertaining movies for kids but there were very few great movies for adults. Also, many of the great directors such as Coppola, Godard, Scorsese, Polanski, Malick went AWOL during a time when they should have been hitting their prime. So the void of great filmmakers combined with all of the studios concentrating on the kiddie market conspired for a down decade for films.

I remember going to the theater to see Million Dollar Baby, I recall it being dramatic but I can't even remember the plot.

There was a backlash from Hollywood because they pushed movies to the breaking point and there was a backlash from audiences that didn't want 3 hour movies. They started making pretentious, bloated, self-indulgent carp coming millions of dollars over budget and months or even years late. "Heaven's Gate" is the textbook example.
It was the 80s. The Reagan Era. Who needs art when there's money to be made?

And yet I look at 1982 through 1988 as a very solid run of best picture winners.
Chariots of Fire- Good film
Ghandi- Great film
Terms of Endearment- An all time favorite top 10
Amadeus-An all time favorite
Out of Africa- In my top 5
Platoon- Good film
The Last Emperor- Great film
The 80's may have lacked a depth of "auteurs"- but that is some solid and beautiful film making in my opinion.

None of those movies come close to the caliber of films that won Best Picture during the 70s. Does anybody consider those films classics along the same vein as The Godfather, French Connection, Godfather II, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Annie Hall and Deer Hunter? The only movie from that list which has stood the test of time is Amadeus. Chariots of Fire is only remembered because of the score. Platoon was considered great for its time but has aged terribly. Gandhi, Terms of Endearment, Out of Africa and The Last Emperor have largely been forgotten. The 80s were largely a mediocre decade for films.

I don't know how many Best Pictures I've seen, but Birdman was underwhelming. Great acting but not much else memorable. Interstellar was far far better.
