I'm gonna hit one into left field and list The Broadway Melody as my pick for worst Best Picture winner that I have seen. It was only the second film ever to win the award and it wasn't very good. The only reason it won was because it was among the first films to make the musical numbers a part of the plot. Beyond that...a very mediocre film.

Here's the opening scene from the movie:

I'm not a big fan of musicals so I'd go with Oliver!

If I were going with bad musicals, I'd pick Chicago over Oliver!. I haven't seen the old old ones.

Unforgiven, while not the worst, just didn't see what all the hoopla was about.

All of the following are terrible winners:

-titanic
- million dollar baby (eastwood is one of the most overrated directors alive)
- dances with Wolves
- braveheart
- Shakespeare in love
- crash
-gladiator
- chicago
- lord of the rings

It's actually quite the mind frick realizing the above were voted best picture.

Titanic...no question

Shakespeare in Love is fantastic! Clever premise, great writing, super performances, smart comedy... The only thing I disagreed with that year was Paltrow's Oscar win. She was wonderful, but Cate Blanchett should have won for Elizabeth.

I knew to avoid many listed here. But of the best picture movies I have seen, the ones I absolutely hated were:

Titanic
Hurt Locker

took to page 5 before Chicago was mentioned?

I can only imagine that is because most of you were too smart to be duped into attending a musical.

It beats the others mentioned that I have seen and I don't even want to see ones like Crash if they are mentioned 30 times prior to Chicago being brought up.

Ironically, I saw TEP because of Seinfeld. Elaine was spot on with her analysis.

Probably Shakespeare in Love for me. I dont even think it was the best movie of that year.

It shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Saving Private Ryan or The Thin Red Line, let alone winning awards over them.

"It was easier to watch than Saving Private Ryan...that certainly influenced the voting."
