Holy shite, I realized I left off Silicon Valley on my list. That is easy in my top 15 shows on HBO all-time. It will be in my top 10 soon enough if it keeps up.

Girls is not concerned with the "issues that are prevalent with this generation" or some such nonsense. It is another entry into my least favorite subgenre, the Catcher in the Rye variant of spoiled rich kids whining that their parents didn't hug them enough. Seriously, STFU. I could not possibly care less about any character on the show.
Self-absorbed, privileged twits lamenting their difficult lot in life is pretty much the antithesis of what I am looking for in art and entertainment.
I reeeeeeeeeally hate this show.
Daaaaamn, tell us how you really feel
I have never watched a single second of that show and I feel all the better for it. Thanks to you guys for confirming it

No I remember Arliss, it just sucked
It's not like I had it in my top 10, it was a favorite show when I was younger and wanted to be a sports agent. To say it sucked it a bit strong but you obviously don't like that genre. Not sure it deserves your venom though

Not a fan of including shows that are still airing.
Well, then the list would fall off quickly. Shows like GoT, True Detective, and even Silicon Valley are definitely worthy but hard to give an exact ranking on just yet.

Gold standard for HBO original series.
Agreed with the first 2. I need to give SFU a watch. As far as dramas as above I loved Deadwood and Boardwalk. I really liked Rome and Carnivale too.

Mr. Show has to be in the top 10. So disappointing that it's not available on HBO Go

I hate to admit this.. but I've never seen The Wire, Curb your Enthusiasm, Deadwood or True Detective. I'm immediately putting these at the top of my "need to watch list". That being said I have The Sopranos and Game of Thrones neck and neck for my top spot..

So much wrong with that list, but the most egregious error is True detective ahead of GOT. I loved the 1st season, but GOT has been the best show on not just HBO, but all of television for 5 years running. Lets see how TD does in its sophomore season before you go crazy with the rankings.
Bout the only thing they got right was The Wire at one, but it would have taken a special kind of stupid to deny them the top spot.

The 20 Best HBO Series of All Time by Sho Nuff
Crossing my fingers that Not Necessarily the News is on there.

It's a pretty steep drop off after the top 7. Considering HBO's reputation, I'm surprised there weren't more elite shows on the list.

This list inspired me to start Six Feet Under. I just finished the pilot and loved the dark humor.

Definitely but it's pretty challenging to binge watch. It's full of depressing situations and characters. However, the journey through the whole show makes the final season, final episode and final scene so damn incredible.

It's great you get to see these with virgin eyes. All of them are so damn good. Get on True Detective stat and you can be ready for S2. Then go Deadwood as it's the next shortest. It's also phenomenal.

The Wire and The Sopranos for me, but GoT is creeping up the rankings for sure.

That's why I haven't done it yet. I watched a few episodes when it first aired live but just didn't keep going.

Crazy that I want to watch an entire series just to see a finale but I keep hearing how good it is and I know you have to understand the show and characters to make it that epic.

So can somebody give me an idea of what I could expect and whether I'd like it? My problem is that I don't generally mind violence and gore and generic horror like zombie and slasher flicks because they're just over-the-top enough that I can view them without much of a visceral reaction. But I don't care to watch the more clinical and/or deliberate portrayals of violence and death (which also means I don't watch most torture porn either.) As a result, I don't watch shows like 'Bones', 'Dexter', and the various CSIs because the whole 'dead bodies and clinical dissections' thing just isn't to my taste, i.e. I find them relatively squicksome, to coin a word. So I've (quite regretfully) avoided "Six Feet Under" despite the critical acclaim because I've always assumed the premise meant it's heavy on the typical mortician stuff that I'm just not a fan of sitting through. I once had to work on dissecting a cadaver, for instance, and I will never do that again as long as I live. I get a mild case of the heebies just remembering it.
Given this information, would anyone still suggest I watch the show? Are my assumptions about the imagery and plotlines of the show off?

Where is Carnivale?
Wrongly left out. I'm assuming that's because it was cancelled too early and too suddenly, but even with that, it deserves a spot on the list.
