I'm convinced girls is the worst show on tv ane everyone hates it but is afraid to say it.

I really do feel like there is some truth to this. As if saying you don't like it will result in you being ostracized from the millennial intelligentsia or something.

I would be, but it's pretty accurate

Why? It's often very accurate. Other times it's just an interesting vehicle to present issues that are prevalent with this generation, even if it's not a direct commentary.

Girls is not concerned with the "issues that are prevalent with this generation" or some such nonsense. It is another entry into my least favorite subgenre, the Catcher in the Rye variant of spoiled rich kids whining that their parents didn't hug them enough. Seriously, STFU. I could not possibly care less about any character on the show.

Self-absorbed, privileged twits lamenting their difficult lot in life is pretty much the antithesis of what I am looking for in art and entertainment.

I reeeeeeeeeally hate this show.

you just love girls due to politics and the fact that the media mouthpieces that have the same politics tell you it's good and you should like it. Its ok to think you love it b.c of that but be honest about it.

FIFY.

i have never watched the show. I don't watch much tv.

Again, entertainment is subjective. But to say that the show doesn't comment on this generation and its issues is false.

Awesome show about the life of a high profile professional sports agent. The Notre Dame episode will always be one of my favorite episodes of television.

The whole thing about wanting to return to a time when athletes weren't paid, when all games were played during the day on real grass. It was something that kinda spoke to me.

But don't you think that commentary is relatively trite? And then to be told that's it's brilliant (and I realize I'm probably being hyperbolic) by others is what gets me.

In fairness, maybe I have not watched it enough, or maybe it's just not for me.

The claim that the show is about the particularities of this generation is not subjective. That is an objective claim of what the show is about. And I think it has more in common with a novel from the 1950's about privileged youths. Yes, it has the trappings of modernity, but that's just window dressing.

Girls is about the generational experience as much as the Sopranos is about growing up in New Jersey.

Trite? Not really.

And I feel like the backlash against Girls is much, much larger than the support. Vocal minority, perhaps?

Regardless, it's not a documentary. I don't get offended by them portraying this generation as self-centered arse holes.

Agree to disagree, I suppose.

Same question I asked earlier: if you hate this show so much, why are you watching it?

I truly believe Silicon Valley will end up being HBO's best comedy series

I said this about Bored To Death. Just an insanely well written and acted show. It's short run will never get it there though, and it'll be hard for any show to overtake Curb.

I've yet to watch Silicon Valley, but I think Veep is better than Bored To Death, for whatever that is worth. But I love anything Julia Louis-Dryfus does. Her comedic timing and acting is brilliant.

I wondered why Arli$$ wasn't even on HBOGO.

Also how they hell can you rank series that are incomplete/still airing?

Personally, I find Veep much funnier than Silicon Valley, and I enjoy SV. Veep's dialog, both the outright and subtle, is hysterical.

Not a fan of including shows that are still airing.

The Wire
The Sopranos
Six Feet Under

Gold standard for HBO original series.

"Carnivale" deserves a lot more respect than it gets. It also deserved more seasons, but sometimes HBO just gets it outright wrong.

Perfect timing for this thread. I just finished binge watching Entourage and need to pick my next binge. Entourage was great and deserves a high ranking and look forward to the upcoming movie. I'm leaning toward either Boardwalk Empire or Deadwood. I'm watching GoT and Silicon Valley real time and both deserve their top 20 rankings. Haven't seen The Wire or Sopranos or Curb yet but will.
