Happy Gilmore

Came out in 1996, so unfortunately doesn't make the cut.

Waterboy, in 1998, does, however - and is funnier than "The Hangover"

I was thinking it was still 2016. Whatever. Plenty of other movies better than the Hangover. Hell, the Hangover isn't even Todd Phillips' best movie. Old School and Road Trip are both funnier. And I didn't see it, but I heard War Dogs was pretty funny.

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell is a better bachelor party movie than The Hangover.

Last 20 years?

So basically you're saying it's funnier than:

Dumb and Dumber
Kingpin
Tommy Boy
What about Bob?

Older than 20 years

I just came here to check the downvotes.

I enjoy the movie. I don't understand the amount of hate it gets. GOAT comedy? Nope.

I feel it is not rewatchable in that it is full of so many "oh shite" visuals and moments. They lose something a second time. The hotel scene in the morning. That was damned funny. But not as funny over and over.

Saw The Hangover in the Theatre with no clue about it other than my buddy's recommendation. It was the hardest I've ever laughed in a theatre, including a lot of the movies listed here. I think a lot of its humor depends on the surprise element of the gag for max effect, so it's not as rewatchable as a lot of the others. But first viewing, in the theatre, it was insanely funny.

If the parameters of this discussion were "on first watch" it would be pretty high up there.

It's shock humor.

Even their end credits always admit this when they scroll through their pics.

Guest appearances, ensemble cast, surprise for shock value, shock for surprise...

It's not a classic comedy...unless you like ensemble pieces where something isn't funny anymore once that surprise gag is revealed.

Just for that time period (2008/09) I thought Forgetting Sarah Marshall was significantly funnier than the hangover as the secondary characters were all much better/more memorable.

The Hangover was good for what it was, but this is a hard no.

I'll submit 40-Year-Old Virgin as my funniest movie since 1997.

You don't have to like Superbad but if you think Hangover is a funnier movie then you should probably think about suicide because you've failed at life.

Better comedies in the last 20 years:

There's Something About Mary

Kick arse

Borat

Old School

Shaun of the Dead

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Superbad

That's not including some movies that are less conventional comedies like The Big Lebowski

That's a tough one to top.

I'm going:

Wedding Crashers
40 Year Old Virgin
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Superbad
Super Troopers
Borat

Those 6 were the most side splitting funny of the last 20 years IMO. Old School is great, but just missed the top tier for me.

ETA:

Forgot Step Brothers. Damn, that's probably in my top tier.

The Hangover would get consideration from me because it was a unique idea and really funny.

If I had to pick one that stands out over the rest of those mentioned, I'd go with Old School. I was in my mid-20's when it was released so I could identify with much of it. Frank the Tank had moments of being a serious character and also the extreme. Most circles of friends also have a character like Vince Vaughn's that keeps pushing the envelope. The cameo by Snoop a Loop is the tie-breaker for me in saying it's my favorite recent comedy.

I also enjoyed This is the End. It was an original idea and had some great moments. The Eastbound and Down guy played himself well and almost makes you think he's like that in real life.

I laughed quite a bit the first time I saw The Hangover, but on repeat viewings, it was a drag. It felt like a handful of funny scenes strung together with awful & uninspired improvisational dialogue. Nothing wrong with doing improv when it works (I bet alot of 40 Year Old Virgin was done on the spot, and it was awesome), but The Hangover was stuffed with filler...
