Chicago and Crash were very bad Best Picture winners
Crash was not very good. Brokeback was better. Crash seems like a "political" pick.

As opposed to brokeback?

Crash>>>>Brokeback

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was amazing only its mediocrity.

I'm prepared to get shite for this, but Titanic beating Good Will Hunting. To this day, I still have no idea why that movie is worshipped the way it is- yes the special effects are good, yes the story gets women all wet, but there is absolutely no way it's a better overall movie than Good Will Hunting.

not gonna get shite from me, i'll tell you that.

To me Good Will Hunting is in my top two favorite movies ever, and for Titanic to win over that movie is ridiculous imo.

Titanic was a good movie that was bigger than it should have been. It was a cultural phenomenon but not a great film. GWH was a great film (at least in my mind) and was deserving of much more respect.

I stopped watching the Oscars after that.

There ya go! I didn't stop watching the Oscars, but SIL getting the Best Picture Oscar over SPR was a CRIME!

OTHO I really liked Shakespeare in Love, at the time I thought it was tough to win over SPR, but to be honest, I'm think SPR isn't aging very well, the beach scene is great, but the rest?

Just saw SPR again of TV...it is STILL good. Don't know what about it is not aging well.

Regarding SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE...is this thing out on DVD? Has anyone seen it since it won that Best Picture Oscar? I haven't. There a reason for that? Bet so! And for the record I DID like SIL...just not in a league with SPR...which is STILL the best war movie ever made.

I was about to post the exact same thing. I know I still watch SPR when it comes on. I haven't heard one person mention SIL other than on this board since it won the Oscar. That to me is a movie that isn't aging well.

Everyone has their opinions. Raging Bull was a great movie, but OP was solid as well.

Titanic and one of the LOTR's winning Oscars is just giving an award to a big, expensive, bloated, but technically impressive movie. Didn't think either should have won.

P.S. The award that pisses me off to this day is best foreign language film going to that POS "Life is Beautiful". What an insulting crapfest. And because of that idiot Benigni, Nick Nolte was absolutely robbed of his Oscar

I did as well and aside from the opening D-Day scene, I don't think its all that spectacular and I really never liked the scenes at the begining and end with the old guy. Its a really good movie, don't get me wrong, i just think its a tad over rated because of the awesome opening D-Day scene.

As for SIL it was never a huge commercially successful movie and was clearly a case of studio lobbying to get the win for marketing purposes, it is, however a good movie, and yes its available on DVD.

Bottom line, SPR probably should have won, but it would not make my top 10 of Best Picture travestys.

Well I can respect your opinion but I think it's a great movie. Lots of great scenes in there. Lots of emotions stirred up throughout the movie. How pissed off was everyone when the German killed the Jewish American (can't remember the character's name) in the hand-to-hand fight in the last battle ?

SIL is on a regular rotation on cable?

I still hold the very unpopular opinion that The Thin Red Line was the better of the two war movies that year.

Mine came very early -- when Apocalypse Now lost to Kramer Vs. Kramer.

Some of us thought "All That Jazz" should have got it that year.

By the way, it won at Cannes that year - over "Apocalypse Now".

Very weak best picture winner but any of the films nominated that year would be considered one of the weakest best picture ever.

I STRONGLY disagree with this statement. Not arguin', just sayin'. I believe you are VERY mistaken in this matter.

The first 15 minutes of Saving Private Ryan is close to the greatest war movie of all time. The rest of it is terrible. So I share your opinion.

I don't think Return of the King should have won especially over Mystic River, Master and Commander, and Lost in Translation. It is the weakest of the three films. The Two Towers should have won over Chicago through.
