Again, probably a good indication of it not aging well.

if that is the reason and its not because they no one has the rights to show it. I could sit here all and list great movies that are not shown frequently on cable channels and that people don't talk about much.

That's weird, because they were up for the Oscar the same year...

In any case - I also think Scheider gave the best male performance that year, though Hoffman and Sellers were great too.

Oh come on. D-Day was awesome but the rest if it does not hold a candle to any of the great Vietnam Films.

Slumdog Millionare beating out The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I don't understand how anyone who actually saw both these movies could say this. I saw just about every major film this year - Slumdog, Button, Gran Torino, Changling, and Milk - and the other four came no where near Slumdog.

IMO a good case can be made for Raging Bull over Ordinary People as well as:

A Clockwork Orange over The French Connection

Taxi Driver over Rocky

Apocalypse Now over Kamer vz Kramer

Dangerous Liaisons over Rain Man

Apollo 13 over Braveheart

Fargo over The English Patient

and certainly

Saving Private Ryan over Shakespeare in Love

Titanic beating Good Will Hunting. To this day, I still have no idea why that movie is worshipped the way it is- yes the special effects are good, yes the story gets women all wet, but there is absolutely no way it's a better overall movie than Good Will Hunting.

I agree that Titanic shouldn't have gotten the Oscar, but I think L.A. Confidential is the movie that should have.

I could never get past the fact he also shrinks as he gets younger. It was just so weird. I did not think it was this spectacular movie. Very overrated IMO.

I think Ordinary People is very good movie worthy of winning. The bigger screw job that resulted though was the nomination and win in the best supporting actor category. The Academy doesn't really have any criteria for determining which category a studio places its nominees, so they can do whatever they want. Clearly Hutton was a main character that should have been in the Best actor category, where in spite of a fine performance he would have lost. It was unfair to the best supporting nominees to have to go against him.

OTHO I really liked Shakespeare in Love, at the time I thought it was tough to win over SPR, but to be honest, I'm think SPR isn't aging very well, the beach scene is great, but the rest?

I think you have to be more familiar with Shakespeare and his works than I am to fully appreciate Shakespeare in Love. However, I'm really in the minority because I think Elizabeth was the best overall picture that year.
