SIL is on a regular rotation on cable?

no, that's part of why i think many don't talk about it, and its not because it isn't any good, because TNT and AMC show all kinds of crappy movies over and over again. they don't show it either because they don't any one will watch or because they don't have the rights to it.

Gotta go with Shakespeare over Ryan most recently in total quality vs. quality. 1941 'How Green was My Valley' over Citizen Kane, Maltese Falcon, Sgt. York and Suspicion needs to be mentioned too.

I've never been a big 'Rocky' fan. I consider Taxi Driver, Network, and All the President's Men better that year.

Ordinary People was HORRIBLE!

I think the biggest upset was Out of Africa beating The Color Purple!!! TCP was nominaded for 13 awards and won NONE! This was when the academy had a personal vendetta against Steven Speilberg.

both of those were snooze fests, Prizzi's Honor, another very underrated movie, should have won that year.

I'm prepared to get shite for this, but Titanic beating Good Will Hunting.

Not from me, and I wager many on this board wouldn't give you shite for it. We're a Titanic-hatin' bunch.

..just not in a league with SPR...which is STILL the best war movie ever made.

Oh come on. D-Day was awesome but the rest if it does not hold a candle to any of the great Vietnam Films.

It is tough to call these instances "screw jobs" because those are all solid movies. Those were just good years for movies. I think the bigger "screw jobs" are when a movie is clearly a better picture at the time and not 70 years later.

Saving Private Ryan was released in July and kind of had a summer blockbuster label. Shakespeare in Love was released nationwide in January of 99. This was a clear instance of the Academy being influenced by the release date. This makes the travesty even bigger.

Hollywood studios have figured this out now. They dictate what gets nominated for Best Picture by waiting until Dec, Jan and even as late as Feb and March to release their "Oscar Worthy" movies nationwide. It is total crap and the how it hasn't been pointed out on a larger scale is beyond me.

How Green Was My Valley is great though. It may not be better than Kane, but it is a great movie.

Again, probably a good indication of it not aging well.

I know we're not going to agree on this, I just think it was one of the biggest screw jobs.

Some of us thought "All That Jazz" should have got it that year.

By the way, it won at Cannes that year - over "Apocalypse Now".

Not that Cannes means any more than the Oscars, but Now won in 1979, Jazz in 1980.

That was not a big surprise.

The biggest upset of my lifetime was when Chariots Of Fire won. No one predicted this, with the exception of Village Voice critic Andrew Sarris.
