Goodfellas was apparently the best movie of an entire decade. So I’ll go with that.

Clint Eastwood's "Changeling" is probably the closest to real life movie I've seen. It is not only based on a true story, but Eastwood would put clips and quotes from news articles in between pages of the script so the actors could understand what was going on during that time.
It was a little under the radar, but a great movie.

Goodfellas really glorified Henry Hill. The real Henry Hill is a scum bag. I love goodfellas don’t get me wrong
The Irishman is pretty much word for word the book ‘I heard you pain houses’, If you believe that version of the Hoffa disappearance then it’s has to be up there.

Apollo 13 is probably my favorite, but We Were Soldiers is up there for me too. Also love Blackhawk Down, so that's probably my top 3.

Or, as far as Pearl Harbor, what about Tora, Tora, Tora?
I like "Tora, Tora, Tora" with its take from both sides of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Apollo 13 is pretty special. The way they show the family not being able to see the TV broadcast because the networks decided going to the moon wasn't a big enough deal to warrant coverage, is telling. Especially when you consider the crap network news covers now.
Whether it's a documentary, or a movie about the space program, I'll be watching because I remember watching the actual live reports from CBS. It was always CBS because of Walter Cronkite. I doubt I even knew other networks showed national news.
Some of the better 70's movies said to be about real stories are:
Serpico (1973)
All the President's Men (1976)
Patton (1970)
Brian's Song (1971)
Badlands (1973)
Helter Skelter (1976)
The Message (1976)
Midnight Express (1978)
Norma Rae (1979)
There are good movies like this from other eras, but the 70's were a really good time period for them. After the rise of the counter culture in the 60's, going through Vietnam and Watergate, people were more receptive to finding out what was really going on.

Apollo 13 is wonderful, but my personal nomination is Miracle. Very, very few artistic licenses taken. Russell nails Herb Brooks in a way that never comes across as a caricature, and it did a phenomenal job capturing the malaise of the time period, without making the Red Army team into boogeymen.
One of my all time favorites.

Fargo's story is based on a true story as much as most movies that carry that quote. Plus, at the beginning of the movie it says "Based on a True Story." So it fits. Now if he would have said factually correct movies, then yeah, Fargo has no claim since its based on nothing but maybe a few random killings in the area in the past.

I’m glad you said The Right Stuff. Assuming Tom Wolfe’s book is accurate, it’s a great “true events” movie. They even recreated actual conversations the astronauts had with each other in the book.
