Fargo's story is based on a true story as much as most movies that carry that quote. Plus, at the beginning of the movie it says "Based on a True Story." So it fits. Now if he would have said factually correct movies, then yeah, Fargo has no claim since its based on nothing but maybe a few random killings in the area in the past.

The Coens have explicitly called the tag at the beginning a joke.

Charlie Wilson's War.

After watching docs on this dude, the reality of it was likely crazier than the movie.

Good choice.

Steve Railsback nailed it as Manson.

My submission is Pride of the Yankees

Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, Walter Brennan, Uncle Otto

How can you go wrong with that cast. My #2 baseball movie after The Natural

Glad someone mentioned "A Bridge Too Far". Always loved that movie.

The 1970 "Waterloo" may not be a classic, but there's something about seeing all those soldiers on screen and know they're not CGI'ed.

But, "Zulu!" may be my favorite.

Clint Eastwood's "Changeling" is probably the closest to real life movie I've seen. It is not only based on a true story, but Eastwood would put clips and quotes from news articles in between pages of the script so the actors could understand what was going on during that time.

Just read through that article and the Wikipedia entry, and that's all kinds of fricked up back in the good old days. Will have to look for the movie.

This was also my pick. I think it may have something to do with being a little too young the first time I saw it.

I still love it as an adult and even though the truth of the story or amount of artistic license taken is at issue.

There's no artistic license with Fargo.

The Coens just threw it in there to be funny.

They have wholly admitted they didn't base their script on anything but their imaginations.
