Watching Apollo 13, and I cannot think of another movie based on specific RL events that was better.

I don't mean things like a movie set in WWII, but if you had a movie that was a retelling of the Battle of Midway based on how it really occurred (and that one of the carriers wasn't actually Optimus Prime - sorry Michael Bay), then that would count.

The book and movie both took a lot of liberties (because obviously nobody knows what really happened), but The Perfect Storm is excellent.

Not saying it’s better than Apollo 13, but I saw TPS in theaters as a kid and it stuck with me, still to this day I think it’s haunting...and somehow the book is scarier (there’s an extremely detailed explanation of what happens when someone drowns, what it feels like etc.)

I have to say nothing pisses me off more in a trailer or the start of a movie when it says “Inspired by True Events”. That’s when you know the movie is dumpster fire. The Lord Rings and Star Wars were inspired by true events. I’ve seen so many shitty movies that preface it with “Based on a True Story” or “Inspired by True Events” where it makes me turn on a story almost instantly. “Based on a True Story” has some good movies, but there isn’t a single good movie that starts off by saying “Inspired by True Events”.

"Donnie Brasco" gets my nod. Close second would be another mob movie in "Goodfellas".

Apollo 13 and Goodfellas are up there. Blackhawk Down is in that league for me.

Like the one from the 1970s?

Or, as far as Pearl Harbor, what about Tora, Tora, Tora?

The Longest Day is a favorite of mine.

If television shows count, HBO's From the Earth to the Moon (largely the same team as Apollo 13) and Chernobyl would be way up there as well.

I agree about Apollo 13 being the best I can think of off the top of my head.

Check out "13 Days"....about the Cuban Missile Crisis if you haven't already.

Yeah Apollo 13 has to be the best.

My personal favorite is Breach. There were a few made for tv moments in it for added drama, but they tried to keep to the truth for the most part in that one. I know the last scene where he’s arrested is the same exact location it actually happened.

I watched Molly’s Game last night. The movie was pretty good. Jessica Chastain’s breasts should get a best supporting actress nomination.
