The Sixers went from a 38 win team with Iverson to a 35 win team when he left and then had a 40 win season the following year after that.

And the year before his last year, they won 43 games. So in his last 2 years, they won 81 games, and when he left, they won 75 in the next two. Wow. What improvement. Yeah, the Nuggets got better when he left, mainly because AI was essentially done at 33 because of all of his injuries. There are legit knocks on Iverson (his shooting percentage first among them), but the idea teams got remarkably better when he left is not one of them. After he left Detroit, where he played a whopping 50 games anyway, the team went from 39 wins to 27 wins. I'm just saying, the Pistons decline had to do with more than just AI.

Iverson was a selfish, ballhog player. But he also was incredibly intense and played harder than just about anyone, and sacrificed his body to the game (some would say recklessly). As for his "practice" speech, he was right. He was getting criticized because he was injured and he didn't miss a game, but he missed a practice. He's right. So f'n what?

Says who? I watched him play a lot of ball and never noticed him go above and beyond the effort being put out by other players.

it probably only looked like he did bc he was smaller than everyone else...

Iverson was selfish, a terrible on ball defender, and a horrible teammate.

There isn't a player in the history of the NBA who wouldn't if they had Iverson's teammates

That doesn't even make sense. So if someone had Iverson's teammates back in the day, they would automatically be selfish, play shitty defense and be a shitty teammate?

I'm not saying I think he was those things, but your response doesn't make sense.

I agree with everything you said. I disagree with the other poster who said he didn't put out effort. Like you said, he ranted on practice because Larry Brown was punishing him for not practicing hard when he was killing himself every night in the games, not practice, in the game.

Ummm...sorry but he doesn't get extra points for being tiny. It's a big man's game, if you're small and you can hang that's fine...but it's just funny everyone using the word sacrifice and effort...how about a little sacrifice of the ball and a little effort to not be a horrible teammate? Once again, I'm so glad the post-jordan depression era of the east is over. The east was UNBEARABLE during that time.

You completely missed my point. If Iverson was such a great player, why didn't his team's performance drop off dramatically without him? Look at all the top players in the league who left their teams. The Cavs went from a 60 win team with Lebron to having the second worst record in the NBA the year after he left. The Hornets win total was cut in half after Chris Paul left. Orlando has gone from an above average Eastern Conference team to one of the worst teams in the NBA without Dwight Howard. I can go on and on. A player whose main attribute is scoring has to either bring other things to the table or score at a highly efficient level to make a big impact on the game. Iverson doesn't fit into either category. Hell, if you gave his 22 shots per game to his other teammates, I'm sure they could have averaged 42% shooting from the field as well. What's the difference?

Yes because if AI didn't take 30+ shots and score 30+ points the Sixers had almost no chance of winning. He has NO ONE to pass to. He has no energy to play D(the fact that he was able to play the passing lanes as well as he did is amazing). There wasn't a single reliable 2nd option on offense his teammates were pure garbage.

So how did the Sixers manage to get a 6-5 record in 2001 without Iverson in the lineup?

If that's directed at me I wasn't implying Iverson didn't play with effort and energy. He did. But I don't think he led the NBA in hustle or anything. He jacked up a bunch of shot and would dive for a loose ball. Awesome talent, wasted potential. End of story.

OP should have just led with his tatted up thug and white people line and left the rest out. Those were the responses he was looking for anyway.

#1 they got a damn good player Andre Miller in return(better than any Teammate AI ever had)

#2 they won a bunch of meaningless games in March and April

#3 more meaningful stats would be they went 5-15 in their next 20 games after Iverson left. It took them 6 years just to have another winning season.

You are exactly the type of poster who he thought would bite when he typed out that line. Low-hanging fruit.

If anything AI is waayyy OVER appreciated...give me Tony Parker or Manu over him anyday...hell Manu has made a living off the bench, AI REFUSED to come off the bench, he'd rather retire...it was beneath him.
