Why has Mike Gundy been passed over so much?

Schools that should have given him a look:
Auburn
Arkansas
Ole miss
Lsu
Florida
Tennessee
Texas
Texas AM
USC
Penn State
I know he wouldn't leave for some of those schools. And yes, I know osu is his alma mater. However, he doesn't have the biggest budget for assistants, doesn't get along well with his administration (or T Boone), and access to recruits is not as good as would be for say....Florida.
I think if tamu, Florida, or lsu threw a shite pile of money they could've had him.
His qb development is great, his recruiting seems to be okay for where he is, and his teams at least show some semblance of defense (I.e. He isn't Baylor-esque).
Why is he constantly overlooked for subpar coaches like mcelwain, sumlin, malzahn, etc?

All of those are pretty lateral except for USCw. Probably because of what Gundy has brought to Stillwater.

None of those jobs outside of Arkansas and ole miss are lateral

aTm is lateral if Arkansas is lateral.

Agreed. Arky and ole miss are the only lateral jobs. Arky has a bigger budget for assistants. But he is probably smart enough to know you can't win at arky enough to please the fans' expectations

as much as he and the big 12 champion for that conference to be much greater than it is, it's not.
sure, he may go to a big time school and put up video game like numbers. but it's defense is ABSOLUTE trash, and he acted like the potential 2011 game between LSU and OSU would have been a 39-36 game.
he's a good coach, but it's in his best interest to stay right where he's at. no need to frick up his coaching reputation going somewhere else and most likely showing his style only works in the perfect circumstance.

Maybe he's happy where he's at and doesn't want to leave, and thus isnt' getting passed over so much as he's telling people he isn't leaving so don't waste your time.

Why is aTm not lateral if Arkansas is?
Arkansas has better facilities, higher operating budget, not sharing a state, and has the same history, if not better.

He's in the best place he could possibly be.

must be some skeletons in his closet. helluva coach though.
Posted on 9/19/17 at 2:12 pm to Moustache
Because he's all business in the first half of the game then party in the back-end.

I think nobody has put him high enough that they're ready to battle Pickens and OSU for him yet. Often discussed, never really pursued, IMO. Similar to Mullen.
But like Mullen, with so many openings, I think guys who have performed consistently well at pretty high levels, if not competing for championships, may get more appealing in the next couple of years

OSU has some pretty deep pockets with T Boone and co.
He's the best coach they've had and at least competitive with the hated Sooners.... unlike the whipping boys they once were.
I forget the streak OU had on them at one time but it wasn't pretty.

from what i've heard it was so bad between him and t boone that i think they would have let him walk.

I'd say it's still not very pretty. There's been as many blowouts as close games since Gundy got there, and the record in the 10 years prior to his hire was 5-5.
series results for Bedlam

Don't know but he is #1 on who I want at A&M. I think Pickens will put aside differences and pay him though

aTm is not getting Gundy. I think they go full go after someone with Texas and/or NFL ties. Who is that though? I do not think it will be Morris either.
I also think it will be a Defensive minded coach, they went offense the last 2 times and they want the wins and nostalgia. Now again who is it? I am not sure, but it leaves Morris, Gundy, and the usual suspects out.

This is basically every hire we've ever made except Sherrill I guess

Okie State is a better program than those three. Traditionally those three suck.
