The rest of their roster is pure garbage and they have zero cap flexibility.

You really have no clue what you're talking about whatsoever.

Any team with two top 15 players doesn't belong on this list.

This is reserved for the Nets/Browns of the world.

You can't seriously be arguing that it's easier to go from a doormat to into the playoffs in the NBA.

Took me a while to get back to this and I decided to check to see if you had a point. My contention is based on the fact that a much higher percentage of teams make the playoffs in the NBA and replacing a single player on a team replaces 20% of the teams starters vs 1 player equals 4.5% of starters in football.

I decided I would us playoff droughts as my metric for comparison. Using that mastic, it turns out the facts do support my argument.

NBA teams with 6 or more year current droughts - 3

Minnesota Timberwolves - 12 years last appearance - 2004
Sacramento Kings - 10 years last appearance - 2006
Phoenix Suns - 6 years last appearance - 2010

NFL teams with 6 or more year droughts -

Buffalo Bills - 17 years last appearance - 1999
Cleveland Browns - - 14 years last appearance - 2002
Los Angeles Rams - 12 years last appearance - 2004
Jacksonville Jaguars - 9 years last appearance - 2007
Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 9 years last appearance - 2007
Tennessee Titans - 8 years last appearance - 2008
New York Jets - 6 years last appearance - 2010
Chicago Bears - 6 years last appearance - 2010

Also, the longest NBA playoff drought was 15 years by the Clippers which is shorter than the longest NFL current drought, much less than the historically long drought of 25 years by the Redskins and Cardinals.

If you have some better metric to use, please present it for consideration.

Agree with everyone ITT saying the Nets. No assets, no exciting young players to build around, no draft picks for the next two seasons, no cap space to really do anything meaningful. That trade with Boston was easily one of the worst in NBA history.

Isles immediately came to mind. You think Long Islsnd wouldn't want them back if the team said they wanted to move back?

I'll look for more and more recent data after work but from 1995-2010 the turnover rate of playoff teams in the NFL was 50%. I haven't found numbers for NBA teams but with 16 playoff teams I know it isn't anywhere close to that high.

That would be an interesting stat to see but I think the relative number of playoff teams that each sport has would skew that number. Honestly, that is part of why I say what I do, more than half of the teams make the playoffs.

30% of the NBA teams (9 teams) have not made the playoffs in the last 3 years. 20% (6 teams) the last 4, and 10% (3 teams) 5 or more (actually 6 or more).

37.5% of NFL teams (12 teams) halve not made the playoffs in the last 3 years, 25% (8 teams) the last 4 or more years (actually 6 or more).

Simply put, from my perspective, the number of teams making the playoffs is the difference maker, over half the league makes the playoffs in the NBA vs 37.5% in the NFL is the real difference maker.

Interesting conversation and I think if you could look at it from something like the percentage of opportunity to make the playoffs, it may actually skew to your position. Enjoyed the back and forth and you making me try to back up my thinking.

i think Long Island would love to have them back, but they won't build a new arena and there's no way the NHL goes back to Nassau. Throw in some cities (cough) (Hamilton) (Quebec) (cough) throwing around some money to draw a team, it's quite likely the Isles move again. Which would be a travesty. The Isles are a classic franchise with 4 Stanley Cups, but things look bleak for them right now, both on and off the ice.

Same here man, nice to have an enlightening back and forth. I've come off my position of it definitely having to be the NBA.

I started to think this way as well earlier but I do think that most of those teams had multiple instances of only missing the playoffs by a game or two.

I've always been intrigued with this, couldn't find much data on it unfortunately. Props to you for doing it by hand

What is AJ Preller's story?

He traded away everything....for nothing. Then he managed to get himself suspended for a month.
