That leaves out over half the population if you exclude women.

No. Grew up in Baton Rouge. Back yard connected to Mr. Smith's which is now the LSU Hilltop Arboretum. Dad is LSU alum. Step father has a scholarship in his name and was a TAF contributor. Grew up going to LSU sporting events. Aprox 60 hrs @ LSU before ending up in California. Not an alum (I guess by your definition I am) but I bleed purple and gold and rock a LSU ballcap regularly in socal. Extreme example I guess. But to your original question hell no. Some of the best LSU fans I've ever met nevet attended LSU.

Immediate family member being an alumnus should count.

You don't. I grew up rooting for Louisville (parents went there), and then went to Tennessee and became All Vol. But my oldest brother went to a small college and so he held onto his Louisville fandom.

Why is that? My brother went to Louisville and I certainly did not give two flying shits about the game tonight. Did not watch.

ETA: I even lived in Louisville and still don't care.

Ok, let me propose this, can an individual be a fan of LSU football, ucla basketball and Yale hockey all without having gone to any of these school? See this makes more sense to me when the attachment is to one particular sport. I don't get why people support the SCHOOL they did not attend.

You're overthinking the hell out of this and it's not worth the trouble.

Everyone is different and every reason you get will be different because not many fans in america are the exact same and certainly not everyone was raised in the same environment or has the same background.

The point of this is stupid because there is no answer or criteria to fit all.

My ND-supporting gf lived for ten years in South Bend, her mom and sister are alums, and she would have gone to ND if they offered the major she wanted to pursue. Does she count as a "legit" fan?

IMO as long as someone has attended the school for at least a few semesters, and actually knows what it is like to go to school at the "college teams school". I loved LSU way before I started attending LSU. If I would have gone to SLU, Ull, or la tech I would have still pulled for LSU over those schools. With that said, I still think you should attend a school other than on game day to really know what is going on at the school.

There's nothing wrong with being a sidewalker. But being a sidewalker who thinks he's hot shite and a better person than someone who actually is attending their favorite team's school is a problem.

I went to tech because my family is not rich and I could not pay for LSU even though I really wanted to go to LSU (I'm glad now I didn't because I would not have met or married my wife).

I was a fan of LSU when I was in HS even though they sucked except for basketball and baseball so just because I didn't go to school there doesn't mean I can not be a fan.
