Seattle is in an odd position here. I mean, you can't just let the QB who won two NFC Titles in his first three years get away if for no other reason than the bad publicity and fan scorn. They had no choice but to pay him big.

On the other hand, pretty much everyone acknowledges that Wilson's success has A LOT to do with the best defense the league has seen in at least 12-13 years and a unique quirky (by NFL standards) offensive scheme. I dont think even the Seattle front office believes Wilson will ever win anything in a traditional offense and without a lot of help.

They are leveraging their future on a guy who really just arrived in the perfect situation. He gets to lean on the best running game in the NFL, the best defense in the NFL and a scheme that asks him to make only a handful of tough throws every game. What happens when the defense isnt as good and Lynch retires?

If he's lucky, his career goes like Terry Bradshaw's did and nobody ever gets to see what it looks like when he's the one driving the ship.

Serious question: when did the ability to manage a game well become a bad thing?

It isnt, but game managers arent worth $90 million. Guys worth $90 million can go out and take a team to at least .500 essentially by themselves. Look at guys like Rivers, Romo and Luck who have never won a title but consistently have put mediocre to bad teams at or above .500 and in contention without much help. You think Russell Wilson gets 8 wins out of the 2013 Cowboys or the 2011 Chargers? You think he takes the Colts to the playoffs last year? I certainly don't. Hell, look at all the Pats team with patchwork receiving corps and backfields Tom Brady has wrecked shop with over the years.

He's marketable. He's "worth" the money he's getting. It's not what we value him at, but the franchise. He puts the asses in the seats.

I mean, he's marketable in as much as any young SB winning QB is.

Aw you know his ex wife probably called him.

I would love to know how the settlement, if any, was structured....or some of the inside legal wrangleings. I remember hearing about that divorce and thinking he was parting ways to protect his future windfall.

Unfortunately, divorce has become a financial planning tool...just like bankruptcy...on both sides. I really can not blame him for the divorce in today's world.

Everyone seems to be an expert on player worth. How much is he worth?

Would you have let him walk and started Tavaris Jackson in his place?

He's 26 and has shown incredible decision making and playmaking ability. You don't let young QBs like that walk on the hope that you pick someone up in the draft.

List your top 5 QBs that you would want for the remainder of their careers.

Attrition has started fwiw

Seahawks released DT Tony McDaniel. He was owed $3 million in salary and bonuses. It was inevitable the Seahawks would have to cut someone to clear cap room after signing Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner to big contract extensions. It's a big loss for Seattle's front seven as McDaniel received PFF's 15th highest defensive tackle grade last season. The 10-year veteran shouldn't have any trouble landing a new team. The only exception in the last 15 years in Peyton Manning in 2006.

Thats cause the opposing QB was only worth about $22,356.16 so your point is spot on

They should have gone for a 6 year deal and locked him in at this rate for a longer period of time.

if he's showing this "incredible decision making and playmaking ability" to the coaching staff, then why don't they use him more to do so?

they (Seahawks) sure got a lot of help from Green Bay in the NFC Championship.

oh, and how bout the round before? yeah, they faced the brute champion of the NFC South... the Panthers.

but, to their credit.. Seattle about had NE in the Super Bowl.

so, spin the wheel and see what happens next right?

Because the offense is built around a run first philosophy. Wilson's performance has been pretty damn good. Especially with the talent that is around him. Great running game, above average oline and no true WR1 on the roster.

I'd say its been above average, not 22mil/yr worth though.

Then people say..."well, he's only had Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin, and Jermaine Kearse".

Golden Tate went off and did better in Detroit
Baldwin is a VERY solid receiver
Kearse isn't just some scrub
Oh, lets not forget Skittles.

I don't follow the question. Is someone else playing QB? They use him every offense snap.

If you mean why don't they pass more, because they don't need to or want to. Their offense is built around the run. Wilson fits what they want to do perfectly. Very good decision maker with his arm and legs. Playmaker with his arm and legs.

ETA: And FWIW, the Seahawks use Wilson just as much as the Packers use Rodgers. 35 plays per game for both - passing attempts + rushing attempts.
