It will be interesting to see if this deal limits the Seahawks in free agency and retaining key players the way similar deals have limited other teams.

Honestly, that's what QB's who can win a Super Bowl cost. Right or wrong, that's the market. You either opt out or pay the man.

We haven't had a good slapfight in a while about whether he is a mediocre game manager or elite QB.

I don't disagree.

I hope they enjoyed their one super bowl victory because they will not get another paying a slightly above average QB that amount of money.

If you actually dig into it, the QB's who won super bowls were making a lot less money when they won it, got the huge payday, and never won again. The only exception in the last 15 years in Peyton Manning in 2006. Brady made $14M last year. Manning took a paycut to $16M this year. Brees was still on his first deal making $10M in 2009. Rodgers was still on his first deal making a lot less in 2010. The list goes on and on. The Seahawks just sealed their fate.

What do you mean "if?" These deals necessarily limit a team's ability to pursue high profile free agents. This is how the cap system is meant to work.

Shrewd front offices have to find value in the draft and second-tier free agents to keep the team afloat.

What is the smallest cap hit for a QB for a contending team right now? Just about every team that is in the running for titles has to commit a large percentage of their cap to the QB position (or has a QB on a rookie deal) . There is a baseline competence a QB must have in order to win a title in the modern NFL (whether he is a game manager or elite misses the point... he needs to hit the minimum competency). If you don't have that, you can't win, or more accurately, it becomes very unlikely. Because of that, the QB can demand a whole boatload of cash. It's the cost of doing business.

He's worth every dime to that team and system though, so you judge him within that.

He's a super bowl QB in that system and that's all we know. We was a bad throw away from 2 peating as a "game manager"

He doesn't turn the ball over, he has a great deep ball, and can extend plays with his arm and leg. He's accurate as well. He doesn't need to be the all everything QB.

Brady at $14M and Manning at $16M compared to Rodgers at $22M. You can get some quality supporters or retain some other superstars with that difference of $6 to 8M.

I actually think Manning's new deal is the future of QB contracts. He took a $4M paycut but gets back $2M of it if the team wins the AFC Championship and the other $2M if they win the super bowl. That ensures that you are actually paying up for a delivered championship.
