Jordan doesn't have the blemishes on his resume

Except for the fact that he only made it to the finals 6/15 seasons.

This argument would have way more merit if LeBron hadn't played with Wade, Bosh, Irving and Love.

Jordan never made it past the first round without Scottie Pippen. So there is that.

he was 1-9 in his first three playoff apperances and got swept in the first round twice. How is this not a blemish. Lebron has never lost in the first round.

He was known as the greatest ever while he was still playing.

So it isn't a case of people hyping him up to legendary status after he's long retired.

He was fricking incredible.

Agreed. But his branding/marketing started in the 80s and blew up in the 90s.

Remember, before he was michael Jordan the goat, he was Air Jordan.

It's kind of weird, but for the most part nobody refers to him as Air Jordan anymore; but he really rose to fame as air Jordan, the high flyer with his tongue out. I guess once he got older, developed the post game and won his second 3peat, that nickname kind of faded.

Brand = ZERO for me.

Mythology/Mystique = you got something there for me. I was in the prime of my sport bar and young partying mid 20's when he was making the second run of 3. Having watched all of that as it happened at that time. Everything was more colorful. That has a major part in the LBJ vs. MJ argument. A guy who is 28 right now is of course going to be Team LBJ. He was too young to really pay attention to Jordan.

That's why I and others fall back on the titles argument.

how much does his brand/mythology factor in conversation?

a ton

he was the first NBA super duper star and NBA marketing was basically created around MJ. the sports media jumped on board because super heroes sell, and they furthered this mythology while hiding all the bad stuff

now i still think he's the best player ever, but the argument was literally created around him as to what greatness is, so unless somebody comes in and copies him exactly (sorry, Kobe, you didn't), the old media who created the mythology will always find a way to snipe the contenders for GOAT

i've argued for years if MJ played in a similar media/social media environment as today, he would have a lot more tarnish on his overall reputation with the regular community.
