Kobe: Best decision I ever made was skipping college to turn pro

With his 20th and final NBA season starting down the backstretch, Bryant was asked following Saturday's All-Star team practices about the best choice he made during that 20-year period. The answer was something that came before he ever put on an NBA uniform.

"The best decision (I ever made was) coming straight to the NBA and skipping college," Bryant said. "That's it – the best one."

When Bryant entered the league in 1996 he was the first guard ever taken straight out high school. Many have made the decision to declare for the draft from high school before and after Bryant, but he is among the most successful players to do so.

Bryant said his path was the appropriate one for him, but that's not the case for everyone. As of the 2006 season players are no longer allowed to make the high school-to-NBA jump. The league put in a requirement of at least one year of college before crossing over to the highest level of the sport.

Is that fair? Not really, Bryant said. Every player has traits individual to themselves and Bryant said he believes every circumstance should be treated differently.

"You have high school players that go to college, stay for four years and come out and they're not ready; you got certain high school players that skip college and they're ready," Bryant said. "So I think it depends on the mentors that you have, it depends on the internal motivation or spirit of the kid himself. Ultimately it depends on the teachers that you have and the mentors that you have. You can go to college for four years and get horrible mentorship and be worse off than a kid who came to the league at 17."

The only reason the NBA got rid of high school to pros is to protect themselves from their own incompetent scouting.

Meh, how could he really know since he didn't do both and compare?

Because NBA has better coaching, money, and structure than college.

I would never trade my college years for anything.

College teaches you so many things outside the classroom...social skills, leadership development, etc., etc.

But I was never offered a multi million dollar contract straight out of high school either...still, college is an awesome experience.

I'm on the opposite side of the equation. I'm a college graduate but I have never been a star guard of the Los Angeles Lakers.

I'm still pretty confident that Kobe is right.

Society has hurt itself by trying to force every single person into college.

The NBA is happy to let players build up a following in college prior to entering the NBA. It has nothing to do with scouting.

just so yall know there are people who actually think basketball players should be forced to go to college for more than one year... they even try to justify it by saying "the NBA isn't going anywhere"

Is this a thread from the early 2000's? Now, I want to know if God Shammgod regrets leaving Providence early.

Great for Kobe, college basketball will suck until they have a rule more similar to football or the officials don't completely own each and every game.

Almost more than a foul per minute, it's no fun basketball.

Maybe one year of college would have cured him of his pretentious douche bag peacock ego-maniacal control freak shite bag rapist attitude and he would have won even more titles. Oh what might have been if he didn't have to tell Shaq how his arse taste.

Solid career though.

Why can't people get the rule correct? Not clicking to see who wrote that though.

I don't mind a kid going after the one year. But as a college BBALL fan... I would rather them stay at least two years... But if they can get 18 year olds to fly $10 million fighter jets they should let an 18 year old do ANYTHING they want... EXCEPT go play in the NFL. 99% of kids coming straight out of Hs would get killed inn the NFL........
