I can see your point about Martin, but no, I think you need to win some hardware.

But Jorge Posada, yes, for instance. Who is a HOF in my eyes

so what you're telling me is you don't think Molina has been an elite defensive catcher the last 10 years? And perhaps one of the 5 best ever? And in between was good enough to finish top 5 in MVP voting 2x.

Although it is an incredibly important defensive position, elite defensive catcher does not always equal elite baseball player.

The responsibility of handling a pitching staff, among other things a catcher does, cannot be quantified, exactly. But just about anyone who has played baseball at a high level will tell you how important that is.

I love stats like WAR, dont get me wrong. But dont get caught up in being a WAR monger, mate.

Sure, not trying to downplay the intangibles. I'm sure they're there. I'd be more willing to let those intangibles influence me if the statistics were borderline, but they really aren't. I don't think any amount of intangibles make up for his relatively pedestrian career statistics when compared to other good catchers of his era.

Unless there is an avelanche of ballots out there, it looks like Jorge Posada won't make it past one year of voting on his candidacy for the hall of fame. What impact if any on Molina?

Using baseball reference Posada has a higher WAR (42.7 to 33.3) Posada was obviously more offensively inclined but he was a 5x All-Star and 2 top 6 finishes in MVP (Molina 7x AS and 2 top 5 finishes MVP)

Guess getting a Yankee boost is a myth since it hasn't helped Moose either who actually is deserving.

George was hurt by the same thing that will hurt Yadi. People that should be off the ballots are still on them sucking up all the air for the marginal cases. I still maintain Yadi won't get in even if not being a part of the crowded ballot era, but that certainly doesn't help him.

Sad to say but if you're not a known somewhat household name as a catcher, you don't get the votes historically.

And Molina isn't...except to baseball nerds.

(and you know what I mean, popular sports culture - it resonates...Piazza, Bench, Fisk, etc. Huge...Baseball fans know him...nobody else does.)

Solid bump

This does hurt Molina's case

I think he should get in and I think he will get in but it's not a slam dunk. Catchers are underrepresented in the HOF.
