He's the best catcher of his generation, which is evident by the "He's a HOF lock" comments in this thread, but relative to HOF catchers he's subpar.

Joe Mauer and Buster Posey disagree.

He's barely the best catcher in his family. Just kidding. He's the finest Molina. Not sure that's HOF-worthy, though.

Best catcher of his generation?

Yadi Molina is 2 tiers below Buster Posey as a player.

Yadier Molina has had 3 seasons above 4 fWAR and has received MVP votes a grand total of 4 times.

He is not a HOF caliber player.

He likes to snap throw down, though, and Tim McCarver likes his leadership.

Explain to me how he was better than Joe Mauer as an overall catcher?

Joe Mauer has a 50 WAR, which is close to HOF average. Not sure I understand that comment either.

Buster Posey has already played a full season's worth of games at 1B and not even close to the same defensive player at catcher by the metrics. So I'm not sure that's a completely fair comparison.

I'm not sure the significance of this stat, but I found it interesting where Molina ranks compared to other catchers historically.

Recent catchers with more career fWAR than Molina:

Joe Mauer
Jorge Posada
jason Kendall
Russell Martin
Brian McCann

Thats great but regardless of defensive skills, hitting is still and giant portion of a players value and Molina is not even league average for his career.

Plenty of metrics like Posey as a catcher. His pitch framing is excellent, and he's a good defensive catcher. He may not be as good as Yadi but the vast difference in hitting ability easily makes up for the defensive difference and then some.

And the reason Posey plays so much first base is because his bat is actually worth keeping in the lineup when he isn't catching. Yadi is has been a replacement level hitter or worse for all but 3 seasons of his career.

I think Molina's argument is defensively he's one of the best catchers of all time. His offense isn't elite, but it's also above average.

None of these guys are close defensively to Molina. I'm not sure he's first ballot, but I find it hard to believe that one of the best defensive players ever at his position would be left out entirely.

I don't know about Molina in the HoF, but I do believe he may be underrated by WAR. WAR doesn't take into account pitch framing or calling a game/managing a staff. Two things Molina supposedly excels at.

Posey is still the best catcher of this generation.

Joe Mauer started a grand total of 885 games at catcher and hasn't caught a game in over 3 years.

WAR leaves a lot out when measuring a catcher's contribution. Fangraphs ever admits that "catcher WAR is probably the least precise of all of the positions."
